Perch season

'Up north' is a totally different country, Phone. It's a long way from civilisation and culture, maybe up to 2-3 - even 4 - hours' drive. It's an open border, but you're advised to get some shots from the doctor before travelling, as members of the Mustelidae family are popular pets, and the owners have a nasty bite.

;)

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Uncultured'? huh our area is famed globally for its writers and poets, Wordsworth, Burns and Potter (Beatrix, not 'Arry').

An' ferrets are fine and useful comanions, we kept lots of 'em, and judged at the local shows, never ever bitten.

We did get out yesterday for a few hours, and as predicted 'almost' had the lake to ourselves, the local PAC secretary was out getting in some piking before the lake switches off for the winter.

We took a pike each on lures. Not huge, mine was a low double.

Ahem Anderoo... Oxford man. And undeniably north of Watford... :)

I feel duty bound as a Londoner to warn everyone on the internet as to your midlands/northern proclivities...

He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days without taking a fish. (Hemingway - The old man and the sea)

I know, I'm on dodgy ground! (Don't tell anyone, but I grew up near Kings Lynn, which is even further north :o Now, that part of the world really is another country!)

Another country Andrew? I was always told it's another planet!

It's still 'darn sarf' though.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

You know all you rural provincial types only ever think about tractors, hay bales, crop rotation, sheep and cows :D

I drove my tractor through your haystack last night

(ooh aah ooh aah)

I threw me pitchfork at your dog to keep quiet

(ooh aah ooh aah)

Now something's telling me

That you'm avoiding me

Come on now darling you've got something I need

Cuz I got a brand new combine harvester

An' I'll give you the key

Come on now let's get together

In perfect harmony

I got twenty acres

An' you got forty-three

Now I got a brand new combine harvester

An' I'll give you the key

She made I laugh ha ha

I'll stick by you, I'll give you all that you need

We'll 'ave twins and triplets

I'm a man built for speed

And you know I'll love you darlin'

So give me your hand

But what I want the most

Is all they acres of land

Cuz I got a brand new combine harvester

An' I'll give you the key

Come on now let's get together

In perfect harmony

I got twenty acres

An' you got forty-three

Now I got a brand new combine harvester

An' I'll give you the key

Ooaah she's a lovely bit of stuff an' all

For seven long years I've been alone in this place

Eat, sleep, in the kitchen, it's a proper disgrace

Now if I cleaned it up would you change your mind

I'll give up drinking scrumpy and that lager and lime

Cuz I got a brand new combine harvester

An' I'll give you the key

Come on now let's get together

In perfect harmony

I got twenty acres

An' you got forty-three

Now I got a brand new combine harvester

An' I'll give you the key

Who loves ya baby ha

Weren't we a grand couple at that last wurzel dance

I wore brand new gaters and me cordouroy pants

In your new Sunday dress with your perfume smelling grand

We had our photos took and us holding hands

Now I got a brand new combine harvester

An' I'll give you the key

Now that we'me both past our fifties I think that you and me

Should stop this galavanting and will you marry me

Coz I got a brand new combine harvester

An' I'll give you the key

Aahh yu're a fine looking woman and I can't wait to get me 'ands on your land

Calling this, or any other time of year 'perch season' is liable to confuse and to misinform novices, so lets not do it again...same applies to pike too.

Cheers Peter, I appreciate you getting this back on track. I hope you let us know how you get on. I've never used prawns or cockles for perch myself - anyone?

Emma, that's fine, you've made that very clear, you don't need to keep saying it. Ta. But I'm afraid I don't live where you live and autumn has always been perch time for me, so you'll understand why I'll keep calling it that.

I've got two days (well, afternoons and evenings) back on the river this weekend after the perch again. After losing that big one last week I need to keep trying. I have a load of lobs put aside for me, so this time I will be able to feed a lot more heavily, which I think will help.
