The real price of a pint?

Steve Randles

Recommended Posts

Bought my first pint of maggots today at a shop new to me, £3.00 for the pint..(three quarters of a pint when I measured them).

I have not bought a "full" pint for years, yet tackle shops still to my mind deceive us by quoting the "pint".

I know there are a lot of tackle dealers who do still sell proper pints as such, but what do you get and for how much?

When will dealers change these measures, and will it go metric...?

In my local tackle shop its around £2 to £2.50 i think, and you usually get a good pint, if you want say whites and reds you invariably end up with 2/3 of a pint of whites and 2/3 of a pint of reds. The shop by the way is chapmans in scunthorpe.

The black tubs with the blue lock tight lids come in pint and 2 pint sizes etc. If you ask for a pint and you have a pint container..funnily enough..it,ll be full.

I pay £2.40 per pint any colour, and he uses an old pint mug brim full. Pinkies and squatts are more expensive of course but as I don't use them , I don't care.

My local tackle dealer told me he could no longer sell maggots in pint measures due to the EU directives on weights and measures. I am now suposed to ask for a "measure" of maggots, just the same amount though, crazy!

A couple of the tackle shops near me have started using 'measures' and I suspect that as no-one has defined a'measure' the amount you get depends on how often you use the shop. There is also one shop that sells prepackaged maggots in celophlane tubs. <expensive> :(

I also suspect Steve, that if you start to become a 'regular' in the shop you mentioned you pint will start to get bigger!

i must admit, all the shops in our area newport and surrounding areas, always give me a fair measure, and nine times out of ten more than a pint, and ocasionally a bag of casters, or some other freebee, all in all, i get good service.

Smelly nets.

Whilst I applaud your sentiments Rik, I bet the majority of the tackle he sells is made abroad!

My local sells his maggots in little prepacked plastic cartons holding about 1/3rd pint for £1.50.
