Winter Warmers

Okay, now the weather in the UK has definitely taken a turn for the worse (or is it?), let's hear some tips for keeping warm whilst fishing and tips to help people catch.

Safety should also be a prime concern whilst fishing and should be high on the agenda at all times, especially when muddy banks are slippery, water temperatures are cold and anglers have fifteen layers of clothing on.

Wellies keep your feet dry but are far too cold for me. Instead get some water proof boots. I have some 'The North Face' boots that have a tounge that is attached to he rest of the shoe so no water can leak in. I used them on the Isle of Arran (Scotland) and they were great. In rain or snow, walking over pebbled beaches to rockky hills to muddy lowlands. I wear them on every fishing trip. Great stuff!

Another tip... always take a mobile and make sure its in a zipped pocket. There is nothing worse than landing a fish and your mobile drops into the water  .

Something I observed a couple of weeks ago Elton, on the bankside, a young lad with a small hot water bottle (apparently put up by his mother) keeping his hands warm. So I thought, where could I get a small hot water bottle, Mmmm.... Poundland, 2 for a pound. Now I take 2 flasks with me, one for my coffee and one for a flask of hot water to fill the hot water bottle for when I get cold. "lovely jubbly" and the flask holds enough water for 4 refils (one of those pump action ones)....hoppy

being grossly overweight the slightest movement causes far more exersion than the ordinary thin bloke ,this inturn causes much panting and sweat production and hence a rise in temperature :P

so my conclusion is being overweight in winter is a good thing despite so called doctors advising to the latter :P

proof .........how many thin seals do you see ? and they live in cold water  :D

in summer this also is a boon ,if you stand facing the scorching sun think how much more shade is on your back :P

DO NOT though swim in the sea ,last year i had a dip and fell asleep ,i was rudely awoken by several bearded people who had covered me in damp towells and were trying to pull me back into the sea

Well said Chesters! nice to see some pro stoutist propaganda for a change.Being slightly rotund myself I love the winter. All year long us fattys have to search hi and lo for fishing clothes that fit,bed chairs that do not collapse under our massive bulk and face countless times that ireverant question "been eating your own boilies then mate?" Now the cold is here we can have the last laugh as we sit watching the skinny boys in their well fitting onepiece suits on there nice ,no chance of breaking, comfy seats freezing their nuts off! :D:P

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Chesters, my experience was worse than yours...

I was lying on the beach, soaking some rays, when said beardy types tied ropes round me, attached them to a boat and "towed me back out to sea".

:D

You can't beat a nice fleecy hat - keep your head warm = keep the rest of you warm. I also appreciate the Fishrite Muffler I won last winter - excellent for keeping your neck warm!

I use those disposable hot gel packs and find them excellent. They last for a good few hours and I can get them at 2 for £1. That said I bought the rechargable version last Winter which is a waste of time as they only last for about 45 mins.
