Autumn is drawing to a close, what are you going to do?

Hi, fellows.

As you know, autumn is drawing to a close. And that's why I want to ask you, how are you going to fish in winter?

For instance, I'm going to wait for ice time and start to fish under the ice.

I'm waiting for you answers.

Hi Denis, its now the time of year here in England when my attention turns mainly to Pike and Chub.Been unusually warm here this Autumn so its a little "behind". Still messing around with my Drop Shotting gear for perch rather than full out piking so far but not long now as its starting to cool down and the weed die back a bit.

Not had any big Perch yet (well not had any that Ive felt warranted weighing) but its been good fun and I'm learning a new method. Might give it a try for the pike as well before it cools down to bait fishing time.

We don't get a heavy enough freeze here to really allow safe ice fishing but I have allways wanted to give it a go!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

I've been fishing for Pike and Zander recently on the Pike front I have only had small Jacks so far but had a few nice low double figure Zander. Once it gets a lot colder I will be concentrating on my local river Lea for Pike and Chub and maybe an out side chance of a few Zander or Perch.

I've had an enjoyable autumn, plenty of new experiences with the lure fishing for perch and zander. The jigging for zeds on the reservoirs has been particularly interesting - fun and challenging.

However, I'm still really looking forward to the proper winter fishing. It's always my favourite part of the season, especially the chub fishing on the rivers. We are desperately in need of rain to get the rivers in their winter trim, but once that's happened and the temperatures drop I'll be straight out there and won't be in again til mid-March :) Roving about with a quivertip rod, fishing big, traditional baits for thumping great chub...perfect.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Lazy fishing time ;)

Sat behind two rods with big fat worms and free running ledger rigs, hoping for big perch and chub.

Somedays i'll put a float out and twitch a worm as well though to be fair.

But on the cold days when it's 'uncomfortable' i won't bother. For me that time will probably be in about a month, when unless we get a mild spell i'll pack it in until february time. :(

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

Get better clothing! My best chubbing session of the last couple of seasons came on a day when the thermometer was at -6ºC. About the only time in winter that I find it IS hopeless is when a thaw has put road salt into the rivers - other than that there's usually something around here that will take a bait - even if it's 'only' grayling!

I am looking forward to trotting maggots or legering flake for chub. Fishing nymphs on fly tackle or trotting maggots for grayling. Perch and maybe barbel towards March. Fly fishing for rainbow trout on my local small stillwater. Maybe finding some time to fish for roach.

I tend to do alot of sea fishing in the winter but on a mild day will be using ultra light rigs with small hooks and hooklengths (down to size 24 hooks to 0.06 hooklengths) with pinkies as bait.

I also like to have a few casts with a lure for some of the big perch in a local stillwater as the light goes in late afternoon / early evening.

Different floats for different folks!
