How long can you keep casters in the fridge?

Given your profession, Andy, this observation worries me ;)

Oh, I don't know. What's natural about say Fois Gras or even Veal?

Hell, it occurs naturally in plenty of stuff that people like to eat. Bit of parmesan on that, sir?

Yes that's very true, which is why I can't see fish rejecting something a bit whiffy.

I don't see why freezing would not preserve casters, but I bet they don't keep long once defrosted before they start to rot inside.

Och, whack them in your groundbait anyway.

Andy,

Ha ha.

BTW, while in VERY limited quantities n-Butyric acid is a great additive I DO NOT recommend using it EVER Ever ever. One little "accident" and you are marked for life. At the moment you get it on you - every relationship you ever had past, present, or futrue is over. Even you mother, now or in the afterlife will deny you.

It's really not worth it - and - I can almost promise, you will use to much.

Someone other than me can tell you why it is a "food additive" for human consumption?????????

(edit: I don't suppose you will be anymore impressed that my "go to" bait is Canadian goose poop. Firm, right on the hook.)

I've used casters in a right old state. Dry, black and practically ready for hatching. I've caught on them bizillions of times. I never throw out maggots or casters. I might have fresh stuff for the hook in general yes but nothing is waste. Even chucking old maggots and casters into a swim is adding something that wasn't there previously.

There speaks a true roach angler. Never throw casters or maggots away - even if they sometimes hatch in inconvenient places. The car, the garage, the campervan, a tackle bag left behind the sofa.........

Going back to Peter Waller's post, a woman's response to things like a MEOMIR (Mass Escape Of Maggots In Refrigerator) or an UCH (Unsolicited Caster Hatch) is a good indication of how wise a choice an angler has made.....:lol:

Same as Andy, cought some decent fish on black stinking casters, well over a week old.

For adding to the groundbait i crush them so they will not float and distract the fish away.

To keep your casters in tip top condition keep them in water, preferrably in the fridge if not somewhere cool and add a baby sterilizing tablet to the water, it keeps your casters in tip top condition for weeks and weeks

I never sterilized my babies, only their bottles :D:D

The two best times to go fishing are when it's raining and when it's not

A week...that's fresh, i've got maggots / casters from the 16th of last month.

They'll stay there until I get out to use them and if I don't use em all up they'll come back home and go in the fridge again B)

Active ingredient is this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_dichloroisocyanurate

I would guess that it just kills off the spoilage bacteria and inhibits the casters from rotting.

I'd have thought a food preservative would be better, but probably hard to obtain.
