This thread is packed with misinformation, hopefully not many new to fishing have read it.

I couldn't agree less really Emma. Ive been Game fishing for years and its made me read the rules and think a bit.

Before this thread started i wouldn't have thought the EA rules would have allowed spinning for brownies in a river that holds salmon and sea trout if you didn't have a salmon and sea trout licence. Now i don't think it really makes much difference how or when you are fishing, you can spin for salmon all year round if you want and with out even get more than a coarse licence. You just have to tell anyone asking that you are fishing for brownies or may be chub depending on which season is open and don't get caught slipping anything in you bag you shouldn't.

No, and the above just confirms the confusion, or at least the viewing of this through local lens. What is normal in one area seems strange to others. We would always spin (and worm) for brown trout even though there were salmon and sea trout running the rivers too.

One can't fish for salmon all year round on a game river...the

Salmon season runs from 1st Feb-31st Oct

If you only have a non migratory trout (and coarse) license you have no business fishing after the brown trout season ends, you can't get away with it by saying you are fishing for coarse species which are not know to be present in the river.

Hiya, don't forget to search out the different depths of the water. You do this by counting down so your lure come in at different heights, this can be especially important with trout. Sometimes they will up up high in the water so you can cast to any movement you see on the surface and start your retrieve as soon as the lure hits the water. they may be down deep hugging the bed so its worth waiting counting down until the line goes slack as it arrives on the bottom, or they may be in any depth in between, once you start getting hits then you know that you may have found them. I learned the value of this one bitter december day, an angler nearby was catching, I wasn't, he advised me to allow my lure to sink before retrieving and after hours of nothing I was getting a fish (rainbow trout) every other cast.

Watch out for fry scattering and jumping out of the water, often in the margains, this is the trout chasing them, so cast into those areas, it can be explosive and productive.

'tight lines' to you and your boy. :)

Thanks addicted to scopex and emma two

Both good informative advise to a total beginner

I`ll certainly go for mepps for starters and also try your retrieve technics :)

Hi ,spinning for trout is excellent & generally easy to do

i always use a 1 piece rod on my local river

i have a 4ft 6"

black beauty ( south bend ) rod

Though when i fish large rivers like the tweed

i switch to a 2 piece 8 ft rod ( Ugly Stick )

It is best to use spinners of all sizes

trout will take a size 00 right up to a size 5

Whilst it is true that they can be caught in all lies &

all river heights & colours

the Best ones are often found in those very akward to cast areas

deep holes for me produce the Biggies

Cast slightly upstream & accross & wind back at a quick rate

as a trout will easy catch up with your spinner

Try to cast under overhanging branches

& often your lure will hit the leaves of the tree

& it will just Plop in to the water tight to the far bank

often half a turn of your reel handle will induce a take

Yes do invest in waders ,But try to stay as close to the bank

as possible

Fish are masters of their enviroment

& when they feed they are constantly chasing things in the water

which involves them turning around a lot ,Only for a split second or two

But they will spot something strange behind them ( You )

It will put them of the feed

Trust me ,I have learnt the hard ways

Never exceed 6 lb breaking strain nylon

it is strong enough

you have 200 metres of the stuff to play with on your spool

Stealth is the answer

if you go just Wading in the river

You disturb other fish

which inturn warns the quarry you are after

Mepps are great lures

They just aint heavy enough in the Smaller sizes

That is why i make my own

you should try it too

its not easy , But with practise you will get better

Hope this helps

:)

Good post. I would add that another good small lure that carries some weight is the abu reflex and others similar which have a heavier body. One of my favourites for perch.

Stealth is the answer

So,so true

Any angler that has mastered stealth and can cast accurately can catch huge bags of trout with the upstream spinner (which is one of the reasons the method gets banned)

If anyone reaches that level of success, then commonsense ought to lead them to impose a personal bag limit on themselves, whatever the rules say.

Conversely, the clumsy, noisy or careless angler will struggle to catch anything at all.

Many of the Larger trout who take your spinner

will Rarely if EVER rise to the fly

Many fly fishermen ( Good ones too )

will of covered these large trout many times , They never even realised they were there
