Thank's chaps :).

Arbo, strange you had so many hook pulls, I wonder if it may be something to do with your tackle ? I don't normally go over a size 14's hook when trotting (even in very pacy water) and 6lb line. If it's possible I try and get below the fish especially if they're any size so theyr're fighting me and the current at the same time, just put on a constant pressure but using a softish rod ( stepped up match rod).

I normally don't get as far as being able to go downstream of them. However, where I fish there are so many trees, bends and snags that just isn't possible. It's interesting that you use a stepped up match rod, as I used to. A time when I believe that I landed a greater proportion of my chub barbel and trout than I do now. Maybe I need to go back to it. I think this one locks.

As regards hooks, I use a 16 or 14 and settled on Drennan Super Spade following some hook straightening incidents - perhaps I need to change. It may be due to the braid as well, perhaps I should go back to nylon.

Whatever, it certainly frustrated my first few days fishing the 2013/14 season!

Mike

EDIT: I use 8lb braid and 6lb link.

I do know people who use braid mainline with a mono bottom and they seem to catch fish ok. Personaly I prefer to use mono (sensor) straight through. In theory it must help prevent hook pulls as it stretches along with the rod bending. A bit of a p!$$er for you loosing all those fish like you have but all you can do is try and solve the problem...it must be something simple, maybe a combination of the rod and the braid...just a thought Mike.

I'm going to use mono first, then try the rod. It's cheaper! However, I do think that hooks with a wider gape may be better too.

Very very very jealous, great stuff!

P.s. I'm even more jealous about the 2 inch barbel. When I was a kid there were plenty if barbs near me, now long gone as they never successfully spawned I guess :'(

I've been using the Drennan Specialist wide gape hooks for a while now Mike, I find them very strong and quite adaptable to different baits. The pic below compares a wide gape with a Drennan Super Specialist normal pattern, both size 14. I'd happily use the wide gape for lobs, maggots or corn but probably only the maggots for the hook on the right.

Just looks like a bit of kidology marketing to me. Isn't that wide gape just a size 12 or even a 10 with size 14 written on the packet?

ps. nice one Ian.
