I Got Hooked

I have just got back from a fishing trip in the lakes, it **** it down every day and i had dreadful sessions of fishing, to make matters worse, my friend who was on the fly, hooked me with a fly which was tied to a barbed hook, the hook went into my cheek about 2 cm under my eye and felt almost impossible to get out, although i managed it in the end, luckily the hook didn't cause to much damage with the barb on the way back out, it wasn't my friends fault, although he did feel bad, but i walked behind him while he was casting, happily oblivious to the danger and thought nothing of it as i'd never been in a predicament like this yet. I regretted that .

Has anyone else had some fishing mishaps such as this one?

Thats why the lakes are there :D

Many years ago, my wife and I were fishing on a strip of land jutting out into a lake, like a peninsula, I was fishing off the side my wife was fishing on the tip, my wife made a cast, as she did so I felt the necklace of weights hit the back of my neck, fortunately I managed to grab the weights to stop the cast, otherwise I would have had a hook in my neck, and in those days all hooks were barbed

I hooked my brother, clean in the bottom lip, with a Blue Zulu, in the exact same manner, when I was about 12. Unfortunately, that cost him a trip to the hospital. Funny thing is, I've never avocated the use of barbless hooks.

i have a scar on the base of a finger ,a chap casted to close to me on folkestone pier and i put my hand up in reflex ,very big barb very big hook and then the flying weight jerked on it ,ooouch luckily the barb came through on the other side so we cut it of and continued but it did fester a bit with the baits juices for a while.

plenty of small hooks as a kid one in eyelid was closest to real damage

I got hooked squarely in the top lip with a size 4 hook once when I was biting the line after tying a hook. I had leant the rod up against my fishing chair and it slid onto the ground dragging the line and lead weight with it. My mate unhooked me by cutting through the hook and pulling the hook free with a pair of plyers. :headhurt: at least I hooked something that day :)

One day i was tightening a knot on a size 1/0 kamasan sea hook using my teeth. The line slipped out of my teeth and the hook somehow became lodged, right upto the bend,in my bottom lip.My mate and his missus were visiting me at the time and she went white and nearly phoned an ambulance. The hook was barbed and pulling it out the way it went in wasn't an option.Luckily the hook, being a kamasan, was very sharp and i managed to push the hook through to the other side of my lip and exposing the barb.By this time my mates girlfriend was close to fainting.I then nipped off the barb with a pair of side cutters and pulled the remainder of the hook back through its entry hole. There was no blood and no visible evidence of the injury.Another good reason for investing in quality tackle.

The only time I really hooked myself was trotting last season. I was rebaiting a size 16 super specialist (barbed) with some tension in the rod tip, it slipped and pulled the hook right into my knuckle. I wasn't worried to start with as it was such a small hook, but it was lodged very solid up to the bend and my finger very quickly went completely numb, and I started to get a little worried...! It wouldn't come out the way it went in and I couldn't push it through so I could cut the point off - it felt like it was going to snap. Eventually, with some really serious force, I managed to push it through and cut off the barb and remove it, the feeling came back and it hurt like hell. I couldn't believe how such a small hook could cause so many problems.

On a related note, I saw a very comical near miss once when pike fishing on one of the Norfolk drains. A guy opposite me had a run, wound down and pulled into the fish. Except that the fish had dropped the bait, and his bait - a whole herring - came shooting out of the water and hit him full in the face with a loud wet 'thwack'! Luckily for him, the hooks were in the other side of the fish.

I've also seen a friend almost knock himself out when striking and missing a bite, and his leger sped out of the water and hit him right in the forehead :o

Standing behind people who are fly fishing is not a great idea. People are usually smart enough to keep clear ( :P ) but sheep, dogs, etc. can be a real pain! I've seen both get hooked on a back cast before - that situation really does need Benny Hill music.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music
