Pike, without a doubt.

Hmmm ... not so sure. I'd discount the zander, but can you imagiune the mayhem a 25 - 30lb perch could wreak ... particularly when you consider that they rarely swim about alone.

If you are talking size for size, then I would say the stickleback. They will attack anything, especially at breeding season.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

All,

This is such a “HARD” question. I'm not sure any fish is "ferocious" against an angler with dynamyte.

When an angler is “species specific” angling he is actually practicing a “craft”. Unlike catch anything this craft requires a certain to high degree of interaction in order to achieve the desired results within a set of prameters (sp) they have set for themselves.

As for the fish - Stamina and fatigue, environment (i.e. weeds, abrasive bottom or current), biology (line cutting teeth, response to water temperature). You know that kind of stuff.

A better question would be which fish “A” or”B” is the craftiest when the angler is working at his maximum skill level? Most species specific anglers can tell or have an immediate clue what’s been hooked and can aggressively apply his craft (maybe(?))

As for myself - a common carp is the most ubquitious and resourceful fish in the US.

Put a stickleback of equal size to a pike in a tank....when the pike gets hungry the stickleback will be consumed....I know this is fact as i've done it. I actually forgot to feed the pike as I lost interest and in the end one master pike remained out of a dozen or so. It had half of it's last remaining m8 inside it's body with the other half sticking out of it's mouth. The pike being consumed went in a bit more at a time as it was digested until the king was left.

I love pike and perch.

Along with chub and grayling they are what get me out of my warm bed on a dark winter's morning.

Although despite being told the contrary by many people over the years, my experience is that neither are particularly fearsome in how they fight.

Don't get me wrong they are no bream, but pound for pound, I don't think they come close to barbel, carp or tench

That doesn't diminish the enjoyment of catching them mind you.I actually probably prefer it as I always see it as more of a challenge

One of by biggest pike was last winter, a lovely 22lber from a small river. However it really didn't scrap that hard...to a certain extent it was just reeling in a big heavy weight...a few lunges towards the end of the fight, but generally speaking I have had better fights from 4lb carp! It was VERY cold though, I don't know if it was so cold that it was a bit lethargic?

But I remember another early spring session fishing a pond with red maggots and worms. I caught a nice mixed bag of tench, crucians ana perch up to about 2lb...and the tench and crucians definitely out-fought the perch (however I accept river perch give much better fights than lake perch).

That said I have only had a few perch over 2lb, so I am by no means an authority on the subject

Equally I think it depends on the approach. Most of my bigger pike have come dead-baiting, however, logic would suggest you would get a more explosive take, and therefore better fight (at least in the initial stages) whilst live-baiting or lure fishing

regardless though, both cracking fish and a joy to catch
