Thresher Shark in Dorset

Elton

Recommended Posts

I have never had any damage caused to the sharks I have caught, all have been returned safely.

Shark fishing is a bit like pike fishing.

Too many people do it, that haven,t got a clue.

Yes with a rod :)

Totally knackered after mind.

It was a fantastic day, they were even tearing the rubby dubby bag apart and taking the floats off the surface.

Sadly I do not think we shall see the like of those days again. :(

Elton:

Anyone know the proper way to report this? Would it be DEFRA?

The public need to know that the majority of anglers don't think it's right to kill a specimen fish for no reason - one way would be to get this in the press for the right reasons...i.e. our response!

Elton

Yep its Defra, or the Environment Agency who are part of them,

They say "If you do suspect that fish are being handled and/or traded illegally we would very much like to hear from you, and will treat all information in strict confidence. Either use the Environment Agency hotline 0800 80 70 60, or contact your local office on 0845 933 3111."

so there you have it if you have the details.

I agree that it was a pity they felt they had to kill it. :(

Apparently they towed it backward to drown it (according to the Dail Mail).

Taking Elton,s point, I,m not sure these were "ordinary" anglers.

I also doubt if they were licenced commercial fishermen.

Perhaps Thursday is not a "signing-on" day in the Dorset area.

Can i just add something about Dorset as an area.

There are many fish and chip shops that have sold shark and chips for years.

I have been going to Dorset for over 40 years.

There was a bounty on any shark by the local fish shops.

Is shark and chips far from swordfish steaks and chips?

When i was about 10 years of age i was staying in Swanage, Dorset.

One night while walking around the stone quay we saw a thresher shark.

It was gliding in less than two feet of water.

It swam around a few boats that were moored.

This area is used by children for crab fishing- loads of smelly squid used to catch the crabs, this may have attracted the fish.

After a few minutes it turned and glided out to sea.

We were all astounded

Lets take our hats off to our sea fishing brothers who have fished for tope and conger eels for years.

They take catch and release very serious and have for many years.

A final thought to those who may wish to kill some critter or other.

Until you can make one and bring it to life you can't kill it.

Equally, i take my hat off to those rsa who freely choose to either release or fillet without any hindrance from worthless legislation, dreamed up and supported by those who consider they are looking after the anglers interests. Take the tope ban for example, that has recently been re-approved by the angling trust's conservation err specialist, yet there was again, no consultation with the rsa, just like the eel take ban. The original tope take ban was dreampt up with the help of the old nfsa and now fully endorsed by the trust without the anglers knowledge while doing it until after the event. Absolutely disgraceful. The major issue i have there was no real take home of the tope in any event. Those tope that are deep hooked and clearly going to die, bleeding through the gills, what a waste to send it back dead as opposed to making use of it and dare i say it, taking it home to eat, would i, yes if it wasn't for the worthless pointless ban that the trust has now endorsed without talking to the very guys who it does effect.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

FWIW About two or three years back we were fishing out of Lymington - there was a Force 6, pushing 7 blowing so we stayed around Hurst Point and did a few drifts there. I had a thresher shark pup follow my mackerel strip as I retrieved, but alas there was no hook-up, or else my life species list would be richer by one. It was early summer, and a lot of weed was running.

It was in the Evening Standard last night. 240lb I think. According to the Standard it was caught by two blokes mackerel fishing. I didn't know sharks took feathers! Sad thing is they sold it to a fish merchant for £180.

 Hardly fishing for mackeral in February, especially with a balloon float. More likely fishing for shark with mackeral bait. Shouldn't be difficult for Southern Sea Fisheries, or their successors, to check the dealers paper work as to the legitimacy of the sale, ie; licensed fisherman or not, if not why did he buy it and if he was a licensed fisherman there's no offence been committed, if not licensed both the dealer and seller should be prosecuted. :D
