ORPHANED BABY ORCA EATS ORPHANED BABY SEALS

 

Keanu, Washington -- Loretta, a 1,300-pound orphaned orca that scientists are attempting to rehabilitate into the wild, surprised her handlers today by devouring Jilly and Jenny, two earless seal pups who were to be released into the Arctic Ocean later this year.

 

The pups, orphaned when their mothers were slain by Inuit hunters, had been released into the same enclosure as Loretta. "I thought they would all play together," explained a tearful Dr. Lori Butterfly Berenson, who had been surrogate mother to the seals for two months. The pups' sad tale came to its bitter end with merciful swiftness, as Loretta took less than a second to devour each pup.

She wants to be thankfull there were'nt two orcas in the enclosure, they'd have played tennis with the seals instead (can't tell i watch discovery can you )

 

Its nice to see the orca called an orca instead of "killer whale" if a wrong name was ever given to an animal it was that one.

I don`t know about the rest of you in this group. But I`ve always been told. Unless a wild animal is in distress ( this does not include being lost from its` parents ) we should leave well alone? The parents invariably look for their lost progeny.

OK! I don`t strictly adhere to the above policy. I`m well known localy as the man that makes baby birds better, by the local kids? I`ve, several bird boxes to get them fed enough to get their flight feathers and be released. Only one bird has made a habit of returning. That`s Robbie the raven. I`ve got pics of the poor little sod as a youngster!! Crows were trying to make breakfast of the little guy.

That was 2yrs ago. Since then he`s appeared every year on our conservatory roof. Not to be fed. Just to say hello.

I assume Dr. Lori Butterfly Berenson is both a marine biologist, and a blonde (though I would have thought the two were mutually exclusive )
