The decline of fishing clubs.

........ Most clubs are a bargain anyway compared to what somed commercial fisheries charge. .......

Exactly right. Fish your buns off all year round for £25 to £30, on some fabulous wild waters (plus a club lake or 2 maybe ;) )

I believe it is good practice for a club to send out reminders, even if it is just one line at the bottom of their newsletter, it just gives people that little nudge if their a bit forgetful like me. The last thing a struggling club wants is to lose members because they did not let members now whats going on. The club is the only one that will lose out, the ex member will probably just go down to the local commercial for his fishing fix.

Hi Terry,

I live in Northampton and have fished the area for more years than I care to admit. In some respects you are right in the fact that the number of clubs with their own water is in decline, however I'm sure if you ask around the local tackle shops (There's a good one in Vicarage Lane in Daventry) they'll put you onto some.

Here's just a few to start you off,

Long Buckby Angling Club

M Hill,

33 South Close,

Long Buckby,

Northants

NN6 7PX

Northampton Britannia Angling Club

C W Gray,

61 Bouverie Walk,

Northampton

NN1 5SN

Northampton Nene Angling Club

Mrs P Walsh,

363 Kettering Road,

Northampton

NN3 6QT

Website www.northamptonneneanglingclub.co.uk

There is also a small pub club at the White Hart pub in Flore and the other big club in the area is The Castle Angling Club again details from your local tackle shop. Plus you've got the Heyford Fishery at Nether Heyford just off the A45 outside Flore. More info http://www.fisheries.co.uk/heyford/index.htm

Further downstream on the Nene you get to the Earls Barton Angling club and a bit further is The Welling borough and District Angling club.

These are just a few of whats available in the area, oh and just outside of Northamptonshire with excellent waters is the Milton Keynes AC. http://www.mkaa.co.uk/So a bit more of a choice than you first thought perhaps.

It's just a case of finding a good shop and having a chat.

If the hat's missing

I've gone fishing

To maximise their incomes perhaps?

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Surely any well run club is in regular contact with it's members? Newsletters, dates for working parties, details of venues closed for matches etc and it'd cost virtually nothing to shove a renewal form in the same evelope!

And the benefits of a reminder at renewal time would I'd have though greatly outweight the cost if you keep a few full paying members you'd have otherwise lost to forgetfulness/lethargy etc. . . . .

Whenever I have run syndicates or been a club secretary I have ALWAYS kept the members informed by letter of both what is going on and renewals.Surely that is part of the job (which is commonly rewarded with a free membership) and paid for by a part of the members subscription? Too many angling administrators these days seem to want the position but not the work.

Surely this is also part of what being a member of a club is about? If we just wanted to pay our money and fish hen we would simpley go to a day ticket vennue.

I agree with Terry T that clubs in the truest meaning are dying.A traditional club arranges matchs, competitions, trips out, social events etc ,keeps records of captures from its waters and generally tries to promote angling. These days most just look as a club as a cheap acsess to water. And equally as sad many club comittess look at there members as just "wallets" to finance thir own fishing.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

OI OI,

have none of the above fishing clubs not got websites ours has a renewal form to print off,

BUT if you do not attend any meeting's throughout the year you SHOULD attend your A.G.M. or you have no right's to moan about what's going on, you can also renew your membership at the same time.
