Legitimate fishing methods ?

The Stillwater barbel thing always makes me laugh. I've watched barbel feeding in the crystal clear waters of Lake Lucerne where they appeared to be quite happy with no inclination to go live in the river that flows out of the lake.

Perhaps the tax rate is higher in the river?

The previous record chub was from a gravel pit in Oxfordshire, which the Thames flooded into.

Anderoo,

If you mean the Mercier Pit fish at 9lbs 5ozs, it still holds the record.

So a Still water Chub still holds the official Chub Record.

Where do they spawn Ken?

Do you think it's the same as stocking them into a muddy puddle?

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Oh yes, for some reason I thought the Lea held the record now. Was there a record-equalling chub from there or did I imagine it?

I don't think I would deliberately stock chub in stillwaters, but if they get in via floods then fair enough. They seem to be fine. Barbel are a different story, and I do have a problem with that, especially as the poor things are usually stuck in some tiny, muddy, crowded hole.

The Lea fish was weighed in a plastic bag and rounded down by an ounce by the BRCC ?

So the Mercier fish still holds the record, a great pity in my opinion, because I think it the Chub Record should be held by a river caught Chub !!

I reckon a Lea chub will squeak over the current record before too long, and then at some point an unknown Thames fish will beat it by a clear pound ;)

I've no idea where they spawn but as the lake is primarily glacially fed, I would assume that they don't breed in the lake and can't swim into a tributary - whether they drop back to the river or whether they live their lives without breeding and are replenished by young fish coming up the river, I don't know. The spot where I was watching them was about a kilometre away from the point where the river exits the lake.

I don't have any particular objection to them being put in "muddy pools". What I do object to is the shear number of natural lakes that have had and are having their natural ecosystems destroyed to provide those "muddy pools". I also resent the fact that they were indiscriminately stocked into rivers outside of their native range.

Is that "native range" now or historically?

Are carp in the UK introductions or just reintroductions after the initial lot were eaten or died childless ?

If carp are natural in european waters its only a blink in time we (as in the UK) were part of the continent of foreigner

I agree fish introduced from mars would probably not be sensible

Whatever animals that roamed europe roamed here so most probably fish did as well ,not so many hippos or big cats today but historically we had them applenty ,mammoth tusk found not two miles away

Unfortunately lots of "fact" is presumption until proof is found to agree or disagree but even proof is presumption in a lot of cases ,are carp native the only thing you can do is ask carp failing that its all open to debate and fossil records and that can only show X was here not X was not ever here ,not just carp ofcourse anything that ever existed

IE did "modern" humans live here 2million years ? If they ceased to exist in what was their stoneage there would be little evidence they ever did (or did not) until we know for sure we just presume one way or the other
