Why Don't Fookin' Teenagers.......... LISTEN

Please, Please, Please..........Cut The Long Story Short

(Patch).....who some of you have replied too his SENSIBLE questions

Has took it upon himself (with good advice from his parents and grandparents) not to touch/use barbed hooks when fishing locally in a private lake for roach/carp

so what does he do go behind everyones back and buy & use size 10 BARBED hair-rigs.....and wait for the punchline..........

caught 1 roach.....(decent size for where we fish)

and then when he decided to change hook.....he's friend walk past him got caught in the line and my son ended up with the size 10 barbed hook embeded in his finger

lets say his mother was not impressed spending 5 1/2 hours in queens hospital havin to walk back to the station when the pubs are at kicking out time.:angry::angry::angry:

So please if you think he needs a good telling off please do so either on this thread or a thread that is started by Patch.........

because he thinks he has done nothing wrong

Thanks for your time

I'm not sure exactly what he's done wrong either other than ignore some advice.

Hooks in fingers is an unfortunate but almost unavoidable for most Anglers I would think.

I'm not a big fan of barbless hooks personally, especially for Carp fishing. In my experience they cause more damage than barbed.

Sounds to me like an accident

Someone tripped on some fishing line and as a result a third party got a hook embedded

I appreciate it was your son who unfortunatly got the hook stuck in him and hope he's none the worse for his experience but I can't see how blaming Patch helps anyone

I hate to harp on again about a very wise man, but accidents are caused and can be avoided. In this case if patch had opted to take advise given to him (although hook choice is personal) then the boy wouldnt have ended up in hospital.

Either way, only club rules can stop people using barbed or indeed barbless hooks, its not our place to tell patch hes done wrong.

Barbless hooks can kill perch simply because they have a number of vital organs in the 'cheek' region, and as has been said, can cause damage to other fish. Several fisheries I know have banned barbless hooks over a certain size simply because of that.

I think he's learned a couple of valuable lessons here.

One, make sure that your tackle is out of arms way when changing hooks/rigs.

Two, make sure he goes fishing with friends that watch where they are going.

As for the barbed hook bit, that's down to personal choice, (I prefer to squash the barbs on my hooks), and getting hooked up yourself is just part of angling, it happens to most of us at some time.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I use both types of hook but whenever possible I use barbless. There is no doubt in my mind that they are less likely to cause damage to both fish and humans than barbed hooks in the hands of the inexperienced . Sure, barbed hooks do little damage to fish when used properly and the fish is handled properly. They do serious damage to people and clothing when in the hands of the wrong people.

I have hooks stuck in me by kids almost every week when coaching. If I was teaching them using barbed hooks, I would begin to look like some of the carp on some other waters around here with more pin pricks than a pin cushion and a ripped mouth!

Barbless hooks for the inexperienced all the time!

theres some pretty clumsy and lazy anglers about ,i have often found hooks in my trousers on returning home (i tend to lie down to gossip on my rounds) not only that i saw a float not 6 feet from the bank and pulled it towards me with a stick to my horror a large hook went within inches of my eye ,why didnt the angler get his float back? ,when a bird gets caught up in line and some passer by on the footpath sees it its certainly not good for angling!

we keep the swims free from overhanging branches up to almost 20 ft (its as long as two people can use a pole saw) and still anglers lose floats in them ,some can be reached without even a stick there so close in the side vegetation!

theres also the strange anglers ,on asking one today if he had caught he remarked he had had a couple but they were playing with the bait!

i asked what hook size he was using he said he was using a 14 but had gone up to a 10 to try and stop the float bouncing about,i suggested an 18 and to shot his float down at least 2" or try a smaller one ,crucian are well known for being finicky with their food once the water clears ,on the return i could plainly see the huge bit of meat hooked over weed a few inches down from my vantage point but i bit my lip and came home.

i like barbless ,the lack of holes cut in landing nets and trousers makes losing the odd fish worth while

90% of the time, the worst thing you can do with a hook injury is go to a hospital. Trouble is kids do like to winge and moan instead og dealing with things so at least the hospital visit will have taught him a lesson.
