Whisky/Whiskey

Of late, I've taken to indulging in a late night short.

Nothing OTT but enough that buying the really good stuff gets expensive.

On comming down market, I was plesantly suprised.

Tescos own brand "Special Reserve" comes in at less than a tenner a bottle and is considerably better than Bells, Grouse et al.

Asda's own was similarly priced but not as good.

Next up was the own brand Black label whisky from Asda. Result ! A couple of quid dearer than Tesco's own and the best yet, even if it's only available in 75cl bottles.

Continuing the experiement, I tried the Lidl own brand called Glen Orchy or sumsuch. Don't even think about it ! Just having it in the house reduced my alcohol consumption by 60% !

The latest one to get tested is a new own brand blended jobbie from Tesco's that boasts of being aged for 12 years. I paid £13 for 1L and to date, it's the cream of the crop.

Along the way, I also tried Asda's own brand of Bourbon which is pretty good as well for a tenner a bottle. It might even be as good as the stuff they used to sell about 5 years ago until the plant making it in the US burned to the ground.

I've still not found a supermarket whisky that is light and aromatic like a good single malt but ut for blended whisky, they're well up on the game and as good or better than any of the major brands.

Does anyone else like a tipple and if so, what's your recomendation at less than £15 a bottle ?

Never found a good scotch for under £15 but my current favourite is a single malt called Finlaggen, £23 a bottle and from one of the main Islay distilleries

When I think Islay, I always thnk of dark whiskey that tastes like old railway sleepers and kippers have been used to flavour it - or have I got that one wrong ?

Yes you've got it wrong, though if you think Grouse, Bells etc are something to aspire to then I'm probably wasting my time, stick to the own brand rubbish.

Bushmills is nice(black bush or their malt anyway) Paddys and Powers are useful for cleaning your horse brasses but thats about it, Tullamore Dew is a nice irish whiskey as well.as for malts my preferences tend to lean towards The Macallan(i have a very nice 25yr old bottle), Dalwhinnie(very smooth but some people may consider it bland) some of the single cask Taliskers(they can be fiery but are very nice never the less, although i don't particularly like the standard one its too rough for my taste) Glenmorangie, highland park and Bunnahabhain.I'm also very partial to Jack Daniels (i prefer the gold medal commerative versions but they can be hard to come by) johnny walker blue label and green label and Wild Turkey. The thing is there is a lot of snobbery around whiskey (especially malt whiskys) like there is with wines and i've found the trick is to find the ones you like and ignore what every other bugger thinks.
