Centre pin reel fishing

OP what have you started? No stopping them now... 'pins have their place, in a cabinet...only joking, well sort of, but a fixed spool is a much better all round tool, not much good when you need to cast 40 yards on the Severn is it? They are brilliant for trotting a float, or maybe margin fishing for Carp and Barbel, but by and large there is just too much sentiment over them and little sense.

Both reels have their strengths and their weaknesses, just that I prefer using a pin both for practicalities and pleasure. Being able to hold my rod in my right hand and using my thumb for reel control whilst using my left hand to hold my wine glass has a lot to commend it!

I'm sure there's plenty rivers up and down the country that have decent enough flow to make good use of a pin. The kind you mention may be best fished with a fixed spool reel but those sluggish rivers arn't my cupp'a tea. I'd most likely leger on a water like that or better still i'd get in the car and find one I liked.

Yes but you might just have to catching loads of nice fish, on beautiful picturesque rivers, with a pleasing way to fish and be happy you may never be a divvy champ. :)

I know I was supposed to reply after approving the post, but so many others better suited to advising you came on :)

For myself, trotting on a lake with a 'pin is near to ideal, and yes you do feel more 'in contact' with the fish than with a fixed spool. Thankfully, nowadays you don't have to spend silly money to get a good reel.

Your lake must have a serious drift problem and/or some strong underwater springs John Lol.

Seriously though, although I agree to a certain degree with Marks view I still get a lot more enjoyment when I'm using a pin for long trotting and find it a lot more fun when playing a decent sized fish.
