How about a therrmometer if some kind? I'd love to get my hands on it to do a bit of "reverse engineering".

This is all I can give you, it's the most recent post from the owner (female :rolleyes: ) of the thingummy jig

 

No nearer! tried the cable idea and it doesnt react. Touched the prongs also with things of various thicknesses etc. The only thing that moved the counter was when I held it over some steam in a pan but it wasnt temperature related, It looks like it may contain a battery but there is just one of those minute screws that is too difficult to move. Its not possible to prise it off as you can with normal batteries . I have drawn a blank!! Thanks all for your suggestions .

This is getting serious. It is cold, windy, spitting snow today. The answer is going to require a unified effort (or sh!t house luck) Here is what I know:

 

It is, in all likelyhood a device manufactured prior to 1965 (solid nylon housing). One google search described the device "handheld digital two wire nylon handle meter" (no luck). Specifically it is NOT related to wind, photography, moisture, turbidity, spot, radiation, temperature, salinity, color, force, flow, oxygen, CO2 or any of a number of various classes of "conductivity" (i.e. electrical, water and air).

It is not a simple comparative, density, tone, frequency. musical note

 

The closes device out of the 56,093 meters I looked at today it most resembles a device that locates metal or wood studs in a wall (won't work, it's readout is not configured correctly.

 

The devices I looked at are all current devices from Google Images

 

Yes, I will accept suggestions. It is bugging the shite out of me. I know, I'm weird.

Its strange a person that buys something and wonders what it is cannot be bothered to undo a small screw and fit batteries to see if it reveals the very answer she wants !

If its marked CE somewhere its pretty modern and having the screw indicates its modern so perhaps removing the screw will reveal more clues to what it is ?

Maybe I'll suggest she shows it to a man. :D

 

Most sensible suggestion I've heard so far is to measure a pulse/heart rate by sticking a finger between the prongs.

 

I'll keep you informed of any developments, and pass on the more sensible suggestions/questions.

It perhaps can only measure what it measures one way hence the reset switch and it only has two digits so its not heart beat (mine gets over a 100 just walking to the fridge) so its not used for a long period either because of the two digits

Having two electrodes is interesting though if they are separate they may sense metal but only in something running through the u shape

Definitely a puzzle with no doubt an obvious use to someone just not here

 

Perhaps it gets hot and its an asp straightener or adder massager
