Grenfell Towers Fire

Yes, it is looking more and more as if the death toll is going to be shockinly high and some very serious questions need to be asked about the ability of the fire bigade to tackle high rise fires, wether they be in commertial or residential settings.

I think the maximum reach of the fire services aerial platforms in London is 32m (approx 11storeys), when I used to work occasionally on the cracked on the flats doing building investigation work we were told if anything happened above 12 stories you were screwed as the fire service had nothing that could go that high, however that was a fair few years ago so things may have changed. It also should be noted these buildings were built in the 70s to building and fire regulations of those times and any updates to these regs are not necessarily retrospective.

No political points ken it wasn't meant for that what's strange is the numbers of fatalities being quoted so low when the terrible thing is it's going to so high the **** is going to hit the fan here politics shouldn't come into this but it will it's a terrible tradegy .

Its strange theres seems to be talk of people "fleeing" with packed suitcases ,if i were in a fire (god forbid ) i would think getting you and your family out would be first in my head not packing my smalls.

Its also alien to me leaving your kids behind ,i like most would die trying to save them but it seems kids have less impact on some people and they leave them to their own fate as if they were expendable!

Nothing new my mum (me now) have a certificate for saving two black kids in a fire ,the parents were seen screaming at the stairwell entrance ,my mum simply walked into the flat (it was on fire but only in the kitchen) and picked both kids up and walked out ,the parents never even tried! Hopefully the kids were removed from the parents but who knows it was long ago

Must be horrific being trapped in a fire ,i cannot think of any worse way to die but anyone in their right mind would never have built such structures and still do!

The media ofcourse milked it bringing in anything with a wisp of 'experience' one chap in his first breath said it was to soon to speculate then spent ten minutes speculating!

I watched some of the demo outside the council offices on the news, and the sheer stupidity of some people beggers belief!

One woman (paraphrasing because I can't remember her exact words) "Why didn't they let us back in to rescue our families?".... You mean let civilians back into a burning block of flats instead of highly trained firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and fire-retardant clothing? You'd have died!

Another woman "Why will they not tell us how many were killed? They will not tell us how many because they don't have room for all the bodies!"..... Or, they can't tell us how many people were killed because they simply do not know at this time, and will not know until the fire brigade manages to get to all parts of the building. Oh, and there's plenty of room for the bodies.

The local council do seem to be a bit lax when it comes to rehousing the victims, but having said that, it must be difficult to suddenly have to find 150+ homes in the immediate area (which is what most of the people on the demo seem to want). With demonstrations like this though, you are always going to get the usual rent-a-mob thicko's turning up to try to cause trouble, I was surprised not to see any idiots wearing those silly Guy Fawkes masks.

Was a terrible thing to happen though, must be terrifying to be on the top floors with no way of escape :(

You would probably be safe on the roof but very Smokey but i guess H & S had the access locked ? But have we any choppers that could lift enough at a time ,the chinooks around here come from close bye several fly over a day

No doubt the Lessons will be learned crap will appear until the next block burns down

The council will put a roof over the head of the vunerable and families with kids but the council are a two edged sword if you kip at an inlaws your pretty well cutting yourself of from help even with kids.

Theres not been spare capacity in council properties for decades so b&b will be the next stop after the local hall and most of that will be filled with our freinds from overseas anyway

The fridge catching fire is a strange cause ,perhaps it was a chip pan fire if they were Muslim then they would be up cooking at night either a late dinner or an early breakfast

Tensions are running high violence is totally uncalled for as it stands there are 4000 tower block flats with no sprinkler systems in this day and age is surely not good enough .

Trouble is nowadays kids have no respect for anything so even a firehose in a cupboard joined to a main on each floor would probably vandalised the lack of a conjoined fire alarm though is reckless

Sprinklers though are a moot point ,if they put out a fire great if they go off accidentally or are set off deliberately then the flats get soaked and need refurbing costing the owners millions and ofcourse probably having to rehouse the tennents while its happening and probably coughing up to replace everything they lost

The old money over lives paradox

We've been told that the fire was caused by an exploding fridge - but they haven't been able to get in and remove the bodies yet, much less do a forensic examination of household appliances.

Today, Mr Khan said that the fire was caused by "years of neglect" - but the building had a £9m refit only last year.

Strange that nobody has dared mention the most likely cause of the fire - someone falling asleep while cooking at one in the morning because it's Ramadan.

It's also strange that nobody has released the recordings of the first few vital 999 calls - the ones that might reveal what actually happened.

I confess that my first thought when this happened was that some hothead had taken it upon themselves to burn Muslims in the aftermath of three terror attacks - but the fact that the fire apparently started in a fourth floor flat kinda puts that fear to bed.

Either way, it seems very likely that those in the flat where the fire started know exactly how it started and got out alive.

I have questions though:

When the people living in this tower are described as "the poorest of the poor", how do they afford a £2,000 a month rent that is more than I take home each month for working full time?

How did Mustafa al-Mansur (a Jeremy Corbyn-supporting political activist) become the organiser of Friday's Grenfell Tower demonstration, in which protesters stormed Kensington Town Hall, when he used to be spokesman for [Abu Hamza's] Finsbury Park Mosque and was arrested ten years ago on suspicion of terrorism offences?
