Pilchard Oil?

Total Fishing, what a laugh :D:D

To think that a simple thing like pilchard oil could stir up so much passion. :D

The debate is simple, horses for courses, and a little of what you fancy does you good, if pilchard keeps you happy great, if it doesn't great. :D

I change hooks, line and sinker all the time looking for a better catch, it is all part of the fun, nothing is written in slabs of granite, it is a hobby not a life and death pursuit.

I fish, I catches a few, I lose a few, BUT I enjoys. Anglers Trust PM

Sam,

I think you'll find the science is way more complicated than 'it floats so it cant work'.

Yes oils float, they are lighter than water, but they don't always float, they also form emulsions which can be oil/water emulsions or water/oil emulsions, depending on whether its bubbles of oil suspended in water or bubbles of water suspended in oil. Dont even ask about invert emulsions.....

Aromatic compounds are generally soluble in oil rather than in water, so I guess that for a fish to detect them they need to be dispersed through the water in oil. I don't know the biology/chemistry of fish senses, so I don't know if they sense the oil soluble aromatics, that we smell, or the water soluble components of the 'juices', or both. Even if its the water soluble components they sense, they will be dispersed much further and quicker as part of an oil emulsion that just in water alone.

That to me is what makes the difference. Just look at the speed and how far a rubby-dubby slick travels, its the oil that does that. A bloody great visible slick, an oil based slick, brings in sharks and everything else in the area, so it must work, whatever the actual mechanics of the chemistry.

that forum looks like the sea fishing equivalent of the awful pike and predators forum, full of idiots with more fishing rods than brain cells

it is interesting having read the thread, and sams opinions of the people on AN that he's still here.

very good piece there on emulsification spanner, an explanation of exactly why oils can and do work!
