  1. Through what? Being a yob or fishing.... I think it can work with some kids, it gives them a choice, but they need backing from home as well. One case where it didn't work, was when a retired friend of mine tried helping a couple of local kids he'd seen fishing at the local pond. He spent hours teaching, answering questions and generally helping them with their fishing. He even showed them the rudd, roach, carp, and tench in his own garden pond. One night he heard a noise in the garden, it was the kids with a landing net, at his pond, when challenged, they said they had told their dad about the pond and he fancied one of his own, so he had told the kids to go get the fish for his own pond!
  2. Keep your fingers inside the loop, and gently unwind from the hook end. It should unwind without tangling. Hope you understand that
  3. Agree with Ayjay and Budgie, only ever used it in summer, and never seen the need to flavour it. I was introduce to wheat when as a kid I used to fish the R Idle, an old guy took me under his wing, and wheat was one of the few summer baits he'd use. One day I witnessed him catch 7 roach for just over 12lb, in a couple of hours, all on wheat, this made me sit up and take notice of the bait. Don't keep it in the house though, I had some in a cupboard I forgotten about, I only remembered when a plague of tiny beetles hatched out and, took over the kitchen cabinets.
  4. Budgie was posting as I was writing( I'm crap at typing) but we seem to agree on most things. Good Luck
  5. Hi Ellioty, good advise from Terry. What shottting pattern are you using? This can also effect how your bait acts when you hold back. I'd suggest using a string of small shot, "shirt button style" you can then adjust the shot to suit. Also feeding, little and often is usually the best, 6-7 maggots/casters before every cast, then try and guide your hookbait into the same path. If you over feed then the fish can drop down stream following the bait, under- feeding can cause them to rise up to intercept the bait, before another fish gets it. If you're catching more gudgeon than anything else, then this could be the answer. Casters as Terry said do usually take longer to "work"up a swim, but once the fish are there they are usually bigger. Try feeding a few gains of hemp as loose feed, this often helps. As you will find out, trotting a swim is really trial and error, a few inches on or of the depth, moving shotting around can make the swim suddenly come alive,or improve the catch rate. Hope this helps, john.
  6. I think it's you Budgie. I'm with Tigger on this one,.......1st tail.....2nd head...... 5th mouth, could be caused by hook, the white eye might be the flash, a couple of the pics have this. I've got my specs on this time

  14. You've got to read "Fishing Hurts" it explains those blank days, and brings a new meaning to being out smarted by the fish.
  15. This one reminds me of an old whale joke, apologies if you've heard it. Two whales swimming in the middle of the ocean, when a ship appears on the horizon. As it gets closer one says,"I recognise that ship, it's that Ahab fella, he's been making our Mobys life a misery, we've got to do something" "Like what"? says the other. "We'll ram them and sink them" says the first. "Thats no good" says the other," they'd harpoon us before we got there" The first one thinks, and then says "I've got it! We'll dive deep and come up under them, shoot water out of our spouts, that will sink them" They start to dive, and the first one says, "Then we'll eat the crew" The second whale then stops and says" no way, I don't mind the odd blow job, but I draw the line at swallowing sea men" Sorry,I did say it was an old one

  20. Bit of a paradox that one, If they don't breed them who will? We've always bred animals for food, maybe they think it's more humane in an abbatoir. Have they been in one?
  21. Should be "recognition". I'll write it out ten times! Go on then! I think one cf the main reasons has already been touched on, inexperience. This problem has been with us for many years, especially on popular waters, with other species. I'm afraid "instant" carp waters must take the blame. They seem to bring a "if it ain't big, it's not worth it" attitude to angling. The number of times I hear "I can only get them to 10-12lbs" and "a few"small" chub or barbel to 3 or 5 lbs respectively". We need to teach newcomers that all fish are worth it, and you learn more by gradually working your way up, than instant success.
  22. A sad but true fact is angling is changing. There used to be big associations, who leased or bought waters to be used by thier members. This is changing, Leeds & District used to have 9-10 thousand members, now its down to 3 thousand-odd. With the upsurge of commercials, with more guaranteed results, and the demise of the rivers, these clubs do not have the "clout" they used to have. More and more waters are going to be lost to small closed membership clubs. The land owner knows how many members there are, making it easier to control, and easier to find the culprits if anything goes wrong. The big association may have been too "match" orientated, but at least the water was available to many more anglers.
