Much as I'm a fan of perch I have to admit that they're only moderate fighters compared to some species. Like all fish they seem to fight best in clear water. However, they're often caught on tackle meant for heavier species and thus under-rated. On the right tackle they often do put up quite a scrap.

Of course, like all species, the odd perch does fight "beyond its weight". One 3lber last summer at Wingham tore off an incredible 50 yards of line and fought every inch of the way to the net!! I'd let it go this far as I initially thought it was a carp. It certainly fought hugely harder than the much heavier tench I caught that morning!

Normally I'd rate tench a little ahead of perch pound for pound. This certainly applies to male tench, that for me are candidates for the best fighters of all coarse fish, even more so than barbel. Only common carp from a river compare with them in my book.

Mullet are SEA fish. (sort of!)

The original thread was 'most powerfull COARSE fish'

Which has now been modified to "most powerfull 'Proper coarse fish' excluding half sea migratory and gamey fishes"

Which means no Trout,Grayling, Mullet, eels or Sturgeon.
