Anti Olympics thread.

I love Sports, almost any Sports (have a problem understanding badminton ), but with all the other things we could spend the money on, do we need the Olympics ?

Please don't say we will make a "profit", a few private Companies might, but the Taxpayer won't.

This has a horrible "Millenium" projects feel to it. :(

Anyway, why can't there be a permanent site in Greece and all competing Countries contribute to its expenses ?

Edited for spelling, not content.

How will they handle the hand gun competitions as hand guns are now illegal in this country?

UK-Fishing-Tackle.co.uk:

Be interesting to see what two or three sports we introduce as 'demonstration events'.....it's kind of a tradition at the Olympics.

I'd suggest pub darts, or killer (those familiar with 8-ball pool will know the rules). Any other suggestions???

Errrrrrrr, Fishing ?

Kinda agree with Cranfield on this one. After the mess that has been made of the Doom and Wembley it looks as if London might just embarass the nation.

Love the idea od demonstration sports though. How about Shin Kicking, Bog Snorkelling, Cheese Rolling and for the final bash a proper game of Shrove Tuesday Football with every Olympian from every country on the field at once.

I've got no objection to the Olympics being held in London (or anywhere else), but what I do object to is the many millions of pounds spent on these presentations exhorting delegates to vote for their country. This is nothing more than extreme and extended junketing at the taxpayers expense.

Surely, and especially with Live8 being in the limelight at the moment that money could be put to a better use.

Why not just pick a name out of the hat during the closing ceremony of the Olympics. That would give the selected country four years to prepare which should be ample.

Obviously only countries wishing to be considered should go into the hat in the first place. They would all have to offer an indemnity against everything going tits up. This would have to be a figure large enough to put off any chancers (£100m ?) and if it ever had to be collected it could then could be distributed to the poorer countries with the proviso that it goes towards sports facilities for children and/or up and coming athletes.
