Booze-ups, breweries, and the EA

The website is currently telling everyone it can't handle licence issue and advises would-be anglers to get their licences via the Post Office.

I did just that, on March 26th.

Trouble is, although the village post office recorded the transaction right smartly, they now have to merely issue a receipt and leave the actual physical sending out of licences to the EA.

So far, the arrival of my licences has not happened. There is some silly "rule" printed on my receipt that says it is only valid for 28 days. More than half that has gone by already. Any ideas what I might say to a bailiff who tries to book me for "no licence" on Day 29 ?

What is it with this organisation ?

Every year, by law, many thousands of anglers need a licence on April 1st

Every year, surprise surprise, the EA finds it can't handle many thousands of applications all at once.

Why cannot licence issue be made "rolling" ? (ie run for 12 months from the date of issue). It would spread the administrative load, and be fairer to people taking up fishing late in the year.

Well, why not?

Dave it would make my day if I was caught on "Day 29" I would look forward to the day in court!.............all though knowing how inflexible British Law can be it wouldnt surprise me if I was still done! Gets worse rather than better each year.

A "mole" within the EA's financing department recently told me that the powers to be were becoming very concerned with the actual "net" amount gained from the Rod Licence due to the administration costs. These in fact being the main reason for increases in the fee rather than getting more money to be used.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Dave I can think of all sorts to say to him but I think I may upset Elton if I posted them on his forum.

I don't see how you can be prosecuted or even taken to court if they have your coin and have proof of payment but they are to mixed up to post out your cards. I think they would just be paying court costs...out of licence money!

Can't get a licence, can't take fish to eat, makes you wonder what the licence is for!

For the first time in my life I'm considering becoming a "poacher", obviously the first time I go fishing and take a perch for tea without a licence I'll get hammered.......I'll just pretend not to speak (the Queen's) English!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

I got mine online for the first time this year. Filled in the forms with my renewal numbers, jumped through the verified by visa hoop, printed the acknowledgement emails in the meantime (went trout fishing at Farmoor with Steve W yesterday) and they both arrived in the post on Saturday, 3 days after application.

Not too bad I thought! The only complaint is that I had to go through the whole thing twice for two separate licences.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

The website is still down, and the telephone ordering service too, tried to buy mine yesterday ready for first trip of the "season" today, and ended up in a bit of a panic searching for a post office open on a Saturday afternoon!

I attempted to buy mine online about a week prior to the old one running out. It was the payment which caused the problems and after 3 different cards were rejected it had to be a trip to the P.O. Talk about slow, I got it yestyerday. Tend to agree with Vagabond on this one apart from the fact that most of us will still have to renew at much the same time

Can't really blame the EA for this one, as it's the Post Office as subcontractors who cannot cope. I applied for mine some time ago and they arrived within 3 days. I got an email from the EA for each licence reminding me to renew, followed by 2 letters telling me the same, after I had paid and was waiting for the new ones. It's the usual case of no joined up thinking, so the EA and the PO don't have a communal database to see what is happening. The EA have a system theat sends out reminders without knowing that you already have renewed. Wasting more time and money that could be better spent elsewhere

The two best times to go fishing are when it's raining and when it's not

What evidence is there for that statement ?

The post office coped with my two (different) licence renewals in 14 seconds. If they were allowed to hand out the licences there and then I would have them within minutes. But they are no longer allowed to do that. I see no reason whatsoever to claim the Post Office is at fault.

The hold-up is at the EA - if their website is down, presumably the information they get electronically from the Post Office (on a daily basis) is also held up.

Did you apply direct to the EA or via a Post Office ?

Well, no change there, then - but plenty of organisations do the same.

Sounds like to good of an idea for any Government dept to ever put it in to practice
