UK Rod-caught species list now 102

Here is a pic of my 102nd UK species (and 92nd English species)sunbleakvillagepond.jpg

This one was from a village pond !

The diagnostic features are a very short lateral line (just 3 or 4 scales in this individual), an upturned mouth (like a rudd's), an olive back with tiny black spots, and a suggestion of a bluish sheen along the sides.

Bait was one tenth of an inch of lobworm tail - DIVIDED INTO FOUR BAITS !! Presented on a #24 hook below one of Elton's mini-porcupine quills (that's a miniature quill, not a miniature porcupine :) ) Fished to a feature - a clump of rushes about two feet out.

Fought all the way in (ie it wriggled as it was swung to hand) It so excited me that I cast out again and caught a second one.

What was it ?

A Sunbleak (aka "motherless minnow", aka Belica) Leucaspius delineatus

It's considered an alien species, but has become established in a few UK waters - like bitterling, pumpkinseed, wels, zander, sterlet, rainbow trout and err yes, carp!

I have to thank Weirwulf for telling me about these fish - it is the first time I have fished this pond for fifty years! The pond used to be good for tench, rudd and perch but I stopped fishing it when carp went in. Obviously other things went in also..........

Anyway - Thanks Vic, your ID was spot on..

Bet they would be interesting for perch too and I doubt an old chub would turn its nose up at one on a little quill...hehehe

It does remind me of some fish I saw fifty odd years ago in Clissold Park London, especially the tint color

Well done Dave.

As an invasive alien species did you smash it on the head?

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Nice result Vagabond! Hope you agree the pond is now a great place to be too. It produced 3 carp and about 30 decent bream on last friday afternoon plus a load of those motherless minnows each time the landing net went in.
