I remember seeing a topic on the MKF forum a while ago (Den, maybe you saw it?) about some famous anglers doing some filming at one of the lakes and having a really good catch. Accusations and hints at roped off swims and other trickery soon started to appear, until the guy in charge popped in to say it was all above board and they had simply turned up like any of the members do, and fished really well!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

perhaps the fish are changing ,i remember catching crucians on a size 10 with half a slice of bread on and catching them and just about everything else but now you struggle with an 18 and punched bread ,same bloke, same pond ,in most cases same swim ;)

the tackles the same (down to the line :whistling: ) but its far harder now

the same could be said of the water being a mixed fishery with a very low carp head count its generally not packed even in the height of the tench season so the fish are mainly supporting themselves on natural food with anglers baits as a top up.

TT I'm sure Den will be along soon to tell you all about his TV fame but I'm sure he will be far to modest to tell you that the reason he was on the program in the first place was because he was all ready a "famous"/well known/highly respected angler of his day. Den was a real "angling hero" in my youth and even though I would now like to regard him as a friend he still is one of my heroes. The "inventor" of the Darkin lay back cast (a fore runner of a lot of modern long distance casting techniques) developer of many different pieces of fishing equipment and a highly successful all round angler. A pretty influential guy on today's angling. His appearance on TVs Golden Maggot just acknowledging his fame rather than creating it,

Like I said I will leave him to give you the exact details as I got it a bit wrong a few years ago and he crucified me! :)

How nice of you Budgie :) Said it all, except substitute "Pendulum" for layback.

No record of the series exists, it was all on film and the Beeb appears to have binned it along with thousands of hours of other stuff.

I must say, that being referred to as "Famous" on prime time TV was quite uplifting :)

That's a bit of an assumption (admittedly you can only go on what you read on here or the time you did visit us) Ian and not really true.

Not really an assumption Budgie as Andrew has said he thinks ledgering produces the bigger fish. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that. What I am saying is maybe if Andrew had tried fishing the margins with the float (if he hadn't) rather than use the usual ledgering approach he may well have hooked some of the waters larger specimines.

I think people can get into a routine of using the same old method and forget the others. I'm not trying to put anyone down just trying to point out that you can easily get blinkerd and just keep banging on with the same method. I don't know if i've got my point over or not I ain't very good at putting thoughts into words as you will know by now.

I knew I would get it wrong again! Seriously though mate I never realised it was the Pendulum! I'm even more impressed now!Was it Moncrief then who developed the Lay Back?

That's a shame about there being no record of that particular series left though. One of the few TV angling series I really liked.I also got the impression that due to the format and "fun" element (ie the carp in the back garden and the "UK record" Piranha) it also appealed to a lot of non anglers. Lots of my mates of the same age (ish) often say they would like to take part in a similar competition.

Matt Hayes and Mick Browns take on it with the "Great Rod Race" just didn't cut it the same for me.Two great anglers yes but "The Fishing Race" (that was the correct title wasn't it rather than "The Golden Maggot",which for those who didn't see it was the trophy they competed for, which its often referred to?) had the "whose who" of that eras anglers in it.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

I'm the worse going for that on here Ian! No I see what you are saying its just like I said it would be very easy to get the wrong impression of how someone (in this case Anderoo) does fish from whats on here.

I'm sure he can answer but I seem to remember he used to float fish the margins quite a lot (admittedly with Perch in mind) In fact the one thing I find most refreshing about the syndicate members on the Course lake is that all though it has to be said that multiple rod, specimen ledgering tactics complete with the dreaded bivvies and buzzers is highly effective most do try and use other techniques as well on a regular basis.

Its quite common to see Glyn winding in his "big rods" and slider fishing the margins in the evening. Not only does he catch plenty of big tench doing this as well as on his "normal" tactics it has to be remembered he had one of the big bream doing this. That's just one example that springs to mind.

You should see the generally high levels of competence shown on our annual "float" match! No a good spread of all round angling skills. Its like it would be easy by whats wrote on here to think of Steve Campbell as a hardcore or bust tench specialist but Ive seen he's just as capable of holding his own with a pole! And so I can continue.

Wingham is definitely a water where all round ability pays off..........noticeable how more carp are caught by "non carp" anglers than the few members of the carp lake who come across to try their luck as well. The AN fish ins also in my mind show this as well.

But you are right it is/would be very easy to get blinkered by one tactic after a bit of success on it and being reminded of such is no bad thing. Also quite poignient that new members also initially do well (no doubt down to not having any pre set ideas)

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Here's an old thread from Anglers Net on the Fishing Race/Golden Maggot trophy.

What a shame that no tapes still exist of this series. Shown prior to video recording and in an era when the BBC wiped films! :(

It sounds intriguing. Maybe, just maybe someone out there has a copy of the series?
