The use of foreign aid money was indefensible in my view.

 

As to whether the state should have paid for the visit, I'd want to know a few facts before giving a firm view. What was the money spent on? What do visits by other heads of state cost?

 

I note that the members of the UK Catholic church paid about £8m and the government £10m. Since he was invited by the Queen as a head of state it seems reasonable to me that the government paid something, though maybe £10m was too much - though of course it's chicken-feed compared with other controversies such as the earnings of bankers!

The catholic church need a bit of financial help for their tours. They are poorer now, after paying out so much in the child abuse/paedophile cases that have come to light.
