I've found that when there's obviously a group of them 'fizzing', it sometimes pays to fish a few inches off bottom.

I'm sure that all those big fins are stirring up the bottom, and the tench take the food that gets stirred up with it.

A few of the lakes produced a few tench this weekend chris so if the weather holds you should be in with a shout!

As to the time of day jairm had a 4lb11 on saturday at about 1pm in complete sunshine! Which lakes are you thinking of?

Matt congrats on your Carp chap .

We are not putting it back it is a lump now put that curry down and go and get the scales

have I told you abouit the cruise control on my Volvo ,,,,,,,bla bla bla Barder rod has it come yet?? and don`t even start me on Chris Lythe :bleh::icecream:

so I'm going tench fishing in the near future.

 

Are tench as sensitive to weather/light conditions as [say] perch, is there an optimal time of day?

 

Went roach fishing this morning, to the old duck decoy where I have had them to 1 lb 14 oz

in the past.

 

Tried to work up a feeding frenzy, but bites were few, and the roach were small. Bites became even fewer as the sun broke through the clouds, and at midday I decided to give it one more hour then pack up.

 

About 12.30 Tung! Solid but lively resistance to this strike - was this a two-pound roach at last? Nope, a tench - between 2 and 3 lbs. (can hear Gozzer cackling from here :huh: )

 

So, to answer your question, that is not the first tench I have had in blazing sunshine, but as summer approaches and things warm up, an early morning start is still the best bet.

No, I wouldn't laugh at that Dave, I know the feeling only too well.

 

 

Now if it had been a 1lb 14oz roach, well.......... :lol::lol:

Most of my tench fishing has been traditional style, e.g. float fishing close in, but in recent seasons it has been more like scaled down carp fishing (little bolt rigs and fake baits) - but this is just because of where I have been fishing.

 

I've never liked the lift method myself, I much prefer a normal waggler set-up.

 

Float fishing for tench is much nicer, but in my opinion the little bolt rigs are far more effective and on some lakes can make tricky tench suddenly easy. I would avoid the maggot clips personally, they have a habit of turning around and masking the hook. Bait straight on the hook or on a short hair is better.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

When looking for Tench I dont just look for the typical fizzing that they are associated with, but as I like to fish for them close in, I look for knocks and movement of lilly pads, sometimes these knocks can be very visible and you can clearly see them shaking, other times more subtle... but all tell tale signs of Tench feeding off the snails that run up and down the stems of the pads... I had my best Tench looking for these signs and fishing a pellet hair rigged near the edge of the pads/reeds with a bit of ground bait thrown in (usually red)....

 

I can't wait to go out for my 1st Tench session. As I live close to Sywell Res I might give that a go as its well known for large Tench!

Sywell has a reputation of throwing up some monster Tench, so well worth ago.

All this talk of tench makes me want to get out there right now!

 

The tench is still being elusive to me so im hoping 2011 is the season I actually get one!

 

hmmm.. two rod licenses, 4 rods - double the chance ;)
