Banning Fox hunting was purely for two reasons. It was for health and safety and it was down to class. The upper classes only did it that's to many a target in itself!

Hunts dont exist as a thing or place ,its a loose collection of people meeting in different places a couple of times a week ,a few (<10%)own horses brought in from somewhere else very few are close enough to ride there so the local connection other than the master and hounds may exist in the same place (they are transported about as well) the idil of the hunting scene in the movies has long gone unless the meeting is at the masters house where the hunt rides out from there to a local farm

The rest of the hunt are supporters (could be from anywhere and are horseless) and a few terrier men who now are technically there to block holes or dig to foxes and shoot them if the fox goes to ground

Hand on heart our village does better out of ramblers and cyclists as the hunt doesnt come through the village but the pub may catch a few supporters with more money than sense to pay the inflated charges it extracts from the stupid

Thanks for that, and you civil reply :clap3:

Yes mostly because the hunts disbanded especially in ww1 ,on returning they found the farmers had almost exterminated the fox population as there was no reason to keep them alive ,as you say the population was re-established with scots foxes whos legs are longer than the english version had ,i presume because they did mountain climbing in the close season.

Fox hunting does control foxes but in the opposite way to what you think

It does not matter how you cut it Chesters, it's not an efficient way of killing foxes. If you count man hours/dead foxes. Befor Cymag was banned my grandad and a couple of my uncles could gas 3 or for fox dens a week. Dog fox, vixen, cubs the lot.

Every time you heard a vixen skraichin' in the night you knew there was still work to be done.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

I think the hunt spokesmen mention "control" not "kill"

They are on the same slippery slope as us when they encourage living creatures to one place purely for enjoyment ,hunt them for a while and let them go (wink)

If we wanted to kill anything (as in that control) its not wise to encourage them and place resgrictions how they are managed ,its a free for all for guns or polish fish eaters in that case

I have always been of the opinion that a fox raiding a Hen house will, kill all the hens then if left alone and not disturbed will come back time & time again

take each hen away bury it then come back for another then do the same until all have been buried. :clap3:

WHat paret of "foxes may be killed with impunity" don't you get Dave?. Where I was brought up foxes were shot on sight. My Grandad never went out the hill without his shotgun and he was out the hill every day. In the lambing season the fox killing went up a gear or two, especially if you could get a few dens full of cubs.

I hope so. Especially if it means cheap venison in the supermarkets.

Deer culling is and has been a regular occurrence round here since fallows were introduced...never likely to see one in a supermarket though, wrong shape, wrong size, wrong colour and, horror of horrors, not killed in an abbatoir....and not enough profit for mr Tesco et al....fortunately.

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!
