I struggle to use many maggots, I'm not taking any this session, so no big perch (or eels) for me.

what I learn't last year lots of red maggots maybe a few pints of caster and lots of lobs would be the answer.

Right on the money there, John

Last year, late May, I float-fished (sliding float, bottom ring only) a bunch of lobs, a couple of feet off the bottom (to avoid eels), and sprayed red maggots little and often to an area of about 10 ft by 10 ft. Used a small float and a big bait so that the undertow would take my bait along the same route as the loose-fed maggots.

Let the float trot through the loose-feed area and beyond. The fish were where the undertow seemed to peter out (my float didn't travel any further)

In 48 hours (fishing daylight only - ie an evening, an all-day, and a morning) got plenty of perch during each session, up to 3lb 2 oz and two more over 1lb 12 oz (perch at Wingham are one of the few fish I weigh) a couple of jack pike and a single tench of about 7.

If that helps anyone, fine - but I must add that last month I did exactly the same things in the same swim and blanked !

Why ? It WAS very cold, and I was really there for the ambience and so that Norma could get a good look at the early migrant warblers before too many leaves were out. That bit of the plan worked.

Good luck to y'all, and I look forward to the reports.

I remember that day you had the perch it's a swim i have kept in the back of my mind for float fishing for a while now. Interesting to hear you blanked recently as its a good time for good sized perch. :)

Mark Cunnington is currently doing his first tench fishing anywhere for many years. His first 2 fish from Wingham were both PBs at 8-07 and 8-14.

The first came at night, the second early afternoon. Both were chunky compared with the thin fish caught a few weeks ago, so they are feeding hard.

Bream fishing Andrew?

I think with the way the lake is fishing right now it's got to be worth a shot, and if it doesn't work maybe some tench will be interested. We'll see. It will depend on which swim I'm in to some extent, but I'm going with bream in mind really, so I'll just be fishing plastics over groundbait.

Ah. Just saw Steve's latest post. Maybe I'll fish for the tench ;)

New weed growth is just beginning to emerge and is covering most of the bottom to a depth of a few inches. Tench of course love weed.

The tops of the bars are largely clear and, as bream don't like weed (even if it's been cleared), I suggest you have at least 1 bait on a bar at night when the bream are most likely to feed..

Yes, normally April is a good month for perch, but there were a lot of anglers getting blanks, at Wingham and elsewhere, during April this year ! ....and a number of threads on the subject....

The continued cold snap from the east was in my mind, the principal reason for an atypical April (I think the Russians have got some sort of wind machine.... :) )

We had left the middle of April free for a Wingham trip, so it was a matter of going anyway, despite the weather. But the birds were splendid - its not too often one can watch a nightingale sing

Even now, I wonder if the main lake has warmed up enough for perch - we'll know in a day or two.

In theory it should be good weather for the perch, dull and overcast with a ripple and bits of rain.

It might just be because I haven't fished for so long (apart from one massively unsuccessful day's fly fishing - which I promised never to mention again...sorry Steve W ;) - I haven't fished since the last day of the season) but I just have this funny feeling that despite the awkward weather it could well be the weekend when it all kicks off.

To be honest I'm looking forward to the BBQs and catching up with everyone as much as the fishing.

Well only 1 more sleep!!!! Can't wait to jump in the car at 3:30am and make my way over to pick my brother up and head down on the 5hr+ drive. Itching to get cracking and if the weather isn't favouring the tench I will still be aiming for the big eels in the evening so I am sure no matter what happens it will be a great trip as usual. I carried on my good run of catching big eels by netting another 4lb+ yesterday. Really whetted my appetite. I wont add fuel to the fire by saying that it came on live maggots fished over more live maggots ;)

So see you guys sat morning. Cant wait :bigemo_harabe_net-193::bigemo_harabe_net-193::bigemo_harabe_net-193::bigemo_harabe_net-193::bigemo_harabe_net-193:
