Huge perch

I love this idea that 2 and 3 pound perch are common. They're like hens teeth up here.

Yes, I've had perch over 2lb but they are very rare beasts and I've never even seen one over 3.

Maybe it's the warmth further south, maybe it's the chalk or maybe it's the signals (I've still never seen one) that they are gorging on.

It's easy to lose perspective, but a 2lb perch is still a cracking fish.

Yep, a 2 lb perch is not to be sniffed at from anywhere, and the smaller the water, the better a two-pounder looks.

A public thank you to Steve B for a really great day's gravel pit lure fishing for perch and pike at the weekend - no giants of either species but plenty of both on the little soft plastics, and the perch were all a 'proper' size. They looked amazing in the clear water, such striking colours, and so aggressive!

Just the change of scene I needed! As has been said already on this topic, perch don't have to be 3lb+ to be worth catching...

I thoroughly enjoyed it too!

The colours are particularly striking this year as the water is even clearer than normal. This is due to using barley straw last year to control the algae. In fact I'll be using barley straw every year from now on.

I've had only the odd lure trip to Wingham this Winter (in fact only the odd trip full stop!). However I've caught perch every time. Hopefully I'll be able to grab a day or two bait fishing for them before Spring arrives and I turn my attention to bream and tench.

Only just over 8 weeks to the Wingham Fish-In now!

One of my targets for this year is to do a bit of fly fishing for coarse fish and Perch are high on the list, personally I will be pleased with anything over a pound!
