a cautionary tale

This is just a short note to plead with everyone that ever fishes from a boat by themselves to be ultra cautious.

A friend of mine who has been employed on Muck for very nearly 30 years, and who has been a professional fisherman for even longer has regretably been lost at sea.

He was out setting creels (pots) yesterday and was last spoken to at 4.00pm. At 8.30 last night his boat was found circling in the sound of Eigg, with no-one aboard.

This guy was regarded by all the fisherman along this coast as one of the best and safest skippers around. His loss will be a dreadful blow to all his many friends and most of all to his family and neighbours on the Isle of Muck.

He always wore a lifejacket. He was always ultra cautious when working solo. The weather was good (force 3 to 4) with a wave height of about 3 to 4 feet in the area he was fishing.

Despite an extensive search over the last 24 hours, with over a dozen fishing boats, 2 lifeboats, a couple of workboats and several yachts, and a coastguard helicopter, and a thorough and extensive land search on Muck and Eigg there is so far no sign of him.

Please next time you are about to launch your boat think of my friend and take extra care.

Brian, rest in peace my friend.

Nick

Nick - that's rough and especially the not knowing what happened.

Could well have been a heart attack or similar when he was at the rail.

Sincere condolences to Brian's family and friends - I didn't know him, but feel for them, as I come from a sea-faring family that has lost at least four who have no graves but the sea.

Never put to sea without acknowledging it is a dangerous place, and take all possible precautions for your safety. I love the sea and sea fishing, but am always aware that each trip is a calculated risk - one can only do one's best to make that risk as small as possible.

What a terrible shame, Nick, for Brian, his family and the community. I'm sure that the thoughts of anyone with a love and respect of the sea are with you all right now.
