R.I.P. - a good thing?

Sadly, that's a position that too many people find themselves in Dave. Of course, you know which group in our society it is that always shouts loudest when someone tries to suggest a more enlightened view of end of life care.

As the one who wrote the 'Rot in Peace' post, in reply to chesters post suggesting it might mean leave the body alone, I didn't mean to offend any one. In fact I fail to understand how it can offend anyone. What do people think happens to a body after it's been buried? Of course if a body is cremated, or mummified the outcome would be different.

I've long believed (since my childhood), that all the 'Rest in Peace', 'In a better place', etc, are only said because it makes the one who said them feel better, and of course gives then something to say at a time when it's difficult say anything. I find the whole taboo around mentioning death, very strange, since it's one of the very few things we all have in common, regardless of class, creed, colour, or status.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

because the last thing anyone who has lost anyone wants to be reminded of is a stinking rotten corpse planted in the ground and the mental image one is left with after thinking about it. nowt to do with taboo's its common sense really isn't it ?

Doesn't bother me ,we dont bury rotten corpses we make sure they dont come back by burning them then burying the ash.

I didnt though (unlike my sister and brother) visit the corpse before it was burned i prefer my memories to be of a living person rather than a dead one.

Cowardly i suppose but my preference

All,

I agree Chesters1. I do listen to others praise me in the future tense but that's because I'm vain, not because I "will have" any particular after life, including no after life at all.

I certainly don't agree with Ken or any of the contingency that wish to "think in my behalf". I wonder by what right or benefit these self righteous feel compelled to define either rest or peace. I believe even non godly souls would like. "rest" (as in tranquility) or "peace" as in(the normal, non warring condition of a nation, group of nations - peace). The third option is equally conditional - nothing at all happens - just dead. Just dead is no doubt, at rest.

How would you reply to "How are you?" - or "What's up?" - or the living charged with disposing of you are not having RIP on your gravestone? Hello!

In most cases "hello" is to attract your attention. What does it mean to the dead?

your not likely to whinge and moan or be insulted if your dead, surly.

That is not the point and you know it.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

What does it mean do be dead? What kind of question is that. It can't be any worse than what it was like before I was born.

Before I became an atheist (I think I was about eight or nine at the time) I was Church of Scotland, a mainstream Presbyterian church, The very idea of having RIP inscribed on ones tombstone would be an anathema to any Calvinist.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

I couldn't give a toss Andy. I quite fancy the idea of being buried in a verticle hole in the ground. You can then wrap me up in an old tattie bag and plant a rowan or a hawthorne tree on top and I'll help push the bugger up. When your dead your dead.

When I was in the Merchant Navy if anyone died on board they would wrap them up in a bit of burlap, tie a couple of shackles round their ankles and feed them to the fishes. No headstone, no eff all.

My feelings about "common sense" mirror those of Albert Einstien "Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen".
