R.I.P. - a good thing?

1 I wouldn't want to wish one eternal activity on a friend.

2. I'm 99.99% certain that when I'm gone that's it, finito, but if not I'd rather rest at or in peace than in turmoil.

1. Quite - I refer y'all to G.E.M. Skues's story "Mr Castwell"

2. As I understand it (and how I used and meant it) it is an acknowledgement that the deceased is now beyond any pain, anguish or suffering and "lives on" in the memory of those who knew him or her.

Nothing more, nothing less, and certainly nothing to do with religion or the lack of it.

PS I'm surprised that any papist-based religion should use RIP - I thought most of them were keen on a spell in purgatory, followed in some cases with eternal damnation, incineration and suffering. "Wailing and gnashing of teeth" etc etc

So our Muslim brothers have it correct when they are surrounded by so many celestial virgins.

Not sure they've thought that one through....

Sorry Andy, but writing RIP as an epithet to someone who is an atheist like me is an insult. You may as well say that god neeeded another angel in heaven. I wouldn't mind at all if someone wrote "Rot In Peace" were carved on my headstone.

Cory,

When you comment without thinking you become the forum's number one hypocrite. Seems to me you cannot insult a dead atheist like you. How you wish to impetrate the meaning of RIP, while you are alive, is up to you. Two of the of the three words can have interpretative connotations.

If I use the salutation "how are you" and you answer "fine" - (1) you’ve been granted a (heavenly) reprieve from the wearisome grind that all but defines the human condition and as a result are experiencing a rare and sublime moment of fineness or (2) you are lying.

I suspect #2

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

Then you were using the phrase as is discussed in my second post.

I agree with Cory to a point. I understand that in some cases, people are simply saying the things that our society expects them to say or using phrases unthinkingly to express a rather vague idea but I too would be insulted if someone (for instance) earnestly told me that a loved one "is in a better place" after their death. I understand what it implies from a religious perspective but they are still saying that the person I loved is better off dead.

"Rest in peace" has rather less potential for offence but it's not a million miles from "now he/she is at peace" which would again rub me up the wrong way if it was said earnestly about a loved one.

Hmm my mum was certainly better off dead than what she was for almost a year before her death ,perhaps i didnt love her?

Whether she is a peace now my dads ashes in his box sit upon hers in the grave is not known ,i know in her lifetime the occurence was rare LOL

Not sure i am thin skinned enough to care what others say nor even less what they think
