Rigs / hooks for Eels!

I'm thinking of having a crack at some eels over the summer, but I always seem to deep hook them

Can anyone suggest rigs that might be more suitable than the simple running leads I've used in the past??

One thing I have noticed is that when I've caught eels while sea fishing they never seem to be as deeply hooked, Maybe larger long shanked hooks is part of the answer ??

going to have to disagree with eels caught sea fishing, as they are veracious feeders I found that 50% of the eel where deep hooked, medway estuary for years. Of course they will die.

This is where TAT fell down, they recommended cutting the line close and sending them back, dead of course. This is where they went wrong in their quest to ban anglers from taking them. One famous quote a while ago now that sticks in the craw was 'everyone counts' and the claim at the time was 98% depletion. At the same time there was also the count at the top end of the thames stating they counted 50 eel, really. That's the thames a massive catchment area for the eel and all they could find was 50. The following year after commencement of the ban along came the match reports and what was found during reporting, yup lots of eel captures. If TAT was true to their ethos of conservation they should have stated at the time to totally ban fishing for them. they didn't. You can't have one without the other, if they still claim depletion there should be no fishing for them. You won't get the aquilla club guys admitting to deep hooking and they may even claim that the hook rusts out.

This is exactly the same as TAT in their quest to get anglers and commercials banned from the bass, and they have. Charter boat business loosing bookings big time, yet the commercial netters off Portland have reached their 1.3 kg landings in two weeks of this month. Funny where salter and his ceo rushed off up to parliament claiming the stock was falling off a cliff.

History repeating it's self, sadly without a care for the consequences.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

I recommend tying the bait on instead of using a hook. This eliminates all deep hooking concerns, and also avoids getting your net, unhooking mat and clothes covered in eel slime :)

I'm sure there was a fairly detailed thread on this subject a few years ago. I tried, but can't find it, but I'm crap at it so maybe someone else can.

I know I added that when I fished for eels, a long time ago, I used to float fish, and that reduced the number of deep hooked fish considerably. It was pointed out that fish an all nighter and constantly watching a float didn't go together very well. I used to fish mainly a couple of hours into dark, or before dawn.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

We used to catch them on red wool ,i presume putting smelly bait inside the wool will catch more ?

It was our closed season bending of the rules

Mind you i guess there was far more eels in the military canal than now ?

Touch leger a lump of luncheon meat, you'll feel them pick it up. I often do this to make unhooking the darn things a lot easier at prime Barbel fishing time.

I don't fish for eels, it's just beneficial for me (and the eel) and my often limited time-frame (depending on club rules/venue) for catching Barbel.

I want to spend my time with a bait in the water fishing for a Barbel, not messing around on the bank with a snotty snake trying to tangle everything in sight: been there, done that, don't enjoy it.

I've had plenty of eels at wingham on bolt rigs - all lip hooked and a doddle to unhook.

They were all accidents while bream/tench fishing using fake baits and smallish hooks (usually size 12-10). I'm sure real animal baits would result in more of them. I did all I could to avoid them ;)

I'm taking part in a species hunt, so was going to put a rod out for them on my next visit ;) I'm going to try floatfishing a lob in the evening, hopefully I won't have to resort to leaving a worm rig out all night .. . .

Maybe the mistake I've been making has been running rigs then, in the past I've used a simple running open ended feeder with chopped worm and just enough groundbait to hold the worms in on the cast

Where's dales when you need him!

I couldn't say how effective bolt v running rig is for them but they will definitely get caught on bolt rigs. The main benefit is the lip hooking - I just used to hold their heads up out of the water and roll the hooks out with forceps.
