Went out for a few hours trotting later this afternoon, had quite a lot of chub to 3lb and some huge dace.  No pictures as it was a very alkward place stood way out in very fast flowing water.  It took all my concentration not to get washed away lol.

Enjoyable though!

Had another few hours stood mid river in very fast powerfully flowing water yesterday. Lots of small chub, roach and dace with a few half decent chub of about 3lb amongst them.

No pics again, just couldn't be harrised to wade back to the bank to take any.  The rocks beneath my feet were so slippy it was a nightmare to wade.  It makes things worse when they are larger ones the size of uneven shaped footballs, washing up bowls and much bigger, with smaller ones inbetween!

Haha, your right John, gotta watch me step, need some felt soles!

I've got the boots already but need a pair of breathable waistwaders to wear with them. I've been looking for a pair since before last crimbo and can't see any that look worth getting.

I think the worst thing that could have happened in that spot would be to fall and damage an ankle, hand, fishing tackle, or get a soaking ?.

The water was fast and powerful but not deep, so I think drowning would be very unlikely, unless your dwarf and then it could get serious lol.

Yeah - after about age 70 your wading really starts going downhill. Its akin to Jim Callaghan's advice "After age 7o, don't stand on one leg to put a sock on"

In Iceland the melting of glaciers each spring gives an extra push to the rivers, and the boulders soon become the size and shape of snooker balls.   stand by the river and you will hear a low rumble as these snooker balls grind against  each other. It demands very careful wading technique. Went to fish salmon in Iceland - I was by then (about 12 years ago at age 75) becoming a bit doddery, but not admitting it, and  waded in regardless.

Jorg my guide probably saved my life by stretching his English and tact  to the utmost, saying  "Dave, you are a brave wader, but not a good one"

Its hard when things like rock-hopping and wading enter the past.

Fun being an eighty odd year old kid, innit? I still clamber up and down a 17 ft granite rock, carrying 2 rods and a back pack

Good on ya' Bob , keep at it while yer can.  because at some point (mine came about five years ago at age 83)

you can still get down to the water- but can ya get back again ?      Now my 4-wheel electric scooter dictates which swims I can fish.

My son decided to have an all nighter at one of our club estate lakes last night; and although I wouldn’t be fishing all night with him I decided to have a few hours chasing a few Carp until the light started to fade at 8pm and then leave him there.

We got setup by around 3pm and decided to fish along one of the island swims which we had not fished for quite a while.

This was my swim facing one of the islands:

There was a dreaded Bream shoal in my swim and I was forever getting my bobbins lifting about a foot before stopping which was a tad annoying and was keeping me fairly busy resetting them every time I tried to pour myself a coffee image.gif.313c110e1d66479d8e106b7ed71f5e34.gif ; unfortunately one of these Bream actually managed to swallow one of my hair rigged boilies hook and all.

The Bream of around 2½lb which managed to swallow one of my hair rigged boilies.

I had four Carp before I left at 8pm; the largest being just over 17lb.

I don’t know how Stuart got on as he hasn’t got home yet.

I havent been out for what feels like an age.  Anhow, I had a couple of hours out later in the afternoon today.  I had a spot in mind which I was heading for in the car, but as I went over a bridge and looked up river I noticed there was no one on that stretch, so I went there instead.  As it happens it was a mistake, the river is really low and I think the swim has had some serious hammer for a while now.

I had taken a nash scope 10ft carp rod, pellets and meat for a change of tactics...couldn't be bothered to go and get maggots to be honest 🙄.  The rod is 2.25lb test but is slimmer than my match float rods and has a all through action when under pressure.  It realy doesn't feel anything like the 2 .25 test is is rated at.  I had chosen to take that particular rod because the planned spot was a hit and hold one and the rod combined with 8lb mono fished straight through was a good combo for the situation.  The spot I decided to drop into instead of my planned one was another hit and hold swim so the rod was still suitable to use there.  I had a dozen trotts with the float before swapping to a leger/touch leger.  The fishing wasn't exactly fast and furious and all I caught was a single chub of about 3lb.

Never mind, at least I got out for a short spell.

That's a nice Chub Ian, 😎. I use a Shimano, 12 foot 2.75 test quite a bit when I go to Kippax Lakes (about 20 minutes drive from our house) & I need it - some of them go 18 Lb+.

Not sure what the Line is now, but it's "Clothes Line" (12 Lb or so Direct on fixed spool) It's pointless fishing with line that doesn't match the Rod. They still put a right old Bend in it lol.

I have it set up with a Porkie Float & fish 8 mm Pellet, Paste or a great big bunch of Maggots down the edge.
