The NRA have a lot to answer for imo. The right to bear arms I get, the right to bear automatic weapons, military assault rifles and high calibre sniper rifles I don't.

Why do you think that automatic weapons and military assault rifles are legal?

Many states also ban the possession, distribution, importation, transportation, and keeping, offering or exposing for sale of fifty caliber rifles.

All,

Ken: I believe California is the only state you cannot own a 50 cal BMG (Browning Machine Gun). In all other states they are considered an "anti-materiel" gun and not a machine gun. Lots and lots of 50 cal out there. For target practicing at 1500 yards you understand.

Chesters1: Yes they, Texas, has the distinction for the most violence.

When there are 300 million privately owned guns and 3 trillion privately owned rounds of ammo this is exactly what I think you should expect. BTW - the entirity of WWII was contested on both sided with 42 billion rounds of ammo.

It is heart-breaking that pro-gun (mostly white) believe ownership is their free pass from anarchy

Connecticut bans the possession, distribution, importation, transportation, and keeping, offering or exposing for sale of the “Barrett Light-Fifty model 82A1,” which is included in the state’s definition of assault weapon.

Maryland regulates the 50 caliber rifle, including the “Barrett light .50 cal. semi-auto” in the list of assault weapons defined as “regulated firearms.”

The District of Columbia deems .50 BMG rifles unregisterable, thereby prohibiting possession of these firearms.

Four states is perhaps pushing the definition of "many" but my point was that they are not universally legal.

I've had many conversations with pro gun advocates and although many refuse to admit it they are almost all motivated by fear. They think that having a gun makes them and their families safer (it doesn't) and that the huge disparity between the US and Europe/Australia/Asia when it comes to violent death is down to blacks/gangs/cities - as if Europe doesn't have blacks/gangs/cities.

They don't tend to like it when you point out that Montana (White/Rural/Wealthy/Trump supporting) has a homicide rate that is five times that of the UK.

I reckon (but have no figures) that the house burglary rate in the U.S. is pro rata less than in UK.

U.S. burglars - "Whats the chances I'll die being caught trying to nick a few trinkets from a house??"

U.K. burglars - "Even if I get caught, I'll most likely live but more likely I'd get away with it - undetected".

Unless of course it happened to be Tony Martin's house!!.

Chicken/Egg scenario, some states ban the .50 cal barret, so there is the barret .416 which is arguably vastly superior IMHO.

Same as illicit or illegal drugs, Govts. ‘Ban’ a drug, in order to legislate they write its own chemical formula into the legislation, criminals change the formula slightly and it’s rinse & repeat once the ‘new’ drug is made illegal.
