Elton, Norrie bought a boat!!!!!!!

A proper hull shape that will get up on plane and a decent motor and that sort of speed is certainly not unreasonable. Fast certainly but not unreasonable.

The 18ft aluminum boat I have now will run nearly that fast (calculated by GPS, speedometer, and time+distance) although it burns more fuel than I like when running wide open. A glass hull would be even faster but they are too easily damaged by the conditions I fish in so I opt for the tougher aluminum and give up some speed.

Some of the bass boats the tourney guys here use can maintain over 70mph. The long reaches on some of the larger lakes in the western US can require a run of 50-80 miles from launch site to fishing location and since time in transit is dead time for fishing, they have some seriously high speed hulls. About all that is touching water when they are running full out is the outboard shaft and the back 3 inches of the hull.

I know the displacement hull designs tend to be more stable in heavy weather and can deal with much heavier loads so I'm guessing that lots of your fishing boats are made like that. Given that they move through the water rather than skimming on top of it, I'd expect to see lots lower speeds regardless of how much horsepower you used to drive them.

I have a Seahog hunter with a 50hp honda on the back the prop is 11 1/4 x 15 pitch, with two 25Ltr petrol tanks, 4hp merc, anchor/chain and all the other parifinailia I get 21knots (25.2mph) at 4800 revs. At WOT i can reach 24 knots (28.2mph).

I have checked this speed using both my chartplotter and handheld backup gps at the same time.

Last thursday I set of from Peel to the Mull a distance of 24.5 Nm, setting the speed by the Plotter to 20 knots it took me one and a quarter hours for the trip, which proves the accuracy of my Gps.

I hope this info is of some help

Norrie:

.do I run along side another boat with a correct one..

Hey Norrie, bring her up this weekend and yo can run it alongside mine, then we will know for sure what speed she does

Given I could get 23knts out of my old heavy Shetland 535 with an old 55 yam on the back.. I would expect yo to be doing a lot more than that. :)

Obviously a great deal has been posted on this subject this afternoon / evening, ranging from Its impossible, through to Norrie's friends refusing to believe the figures could be wrong, because they like him. Its hard to thrash out a subject to find a possible problem against this. Shame.
