Love the comment re the 22 lb 15 oz Australian fish ..... "questionable"

 

Sounds a little moody :D But does any one know much about Aussie Perch? I have heard rumours over the years about a small batch been taken over from Europe and then been introduced to a few places and then growing to monster sizes. I have not seen any real evidence to support these "rumours" but always thought it was an interesting story.

I uesd to watch rex hunts fishing and the uesd to catch red fins (perch) to eat and i hear they are very good but they seem about the same size there as they are here they never got any over a 1lb or so but who know a 22LB perch that would be a sight i wonder how big its mouth would be

Maybe the Aussie fish was a Barramundi and claimed in good faith from some one who thought it was a Perch.

Size range

Much of the Australian popular literature gives a maximum size of 60 cm and weight 10.4 kg. This appears to be anecdotal with no official figures indicating that the species grows this large. Redfin commonly grow to 40 cm to 45 cm in length and weights of 1 kg to 2 kg.

After a little more searching on that interesting web site I found three different spices that Australians referrer to as Perch. Macquania Colonorum ( Estuary Perch @ 22 lb 10z) Bidyanus Bidyanus (Silver Perch @ 17lb 10) and Macquaria Ambigua (Golden Perch 59 lb 8 oz) which may give us the answer to the 22lb perch that it is a different speices to what we no as the perch. There are some fantastic species of fish on that we site I would love to catch a Esox Reichertii or Amur pike and a Speckled peacock what fantastic looking fish.

As for a reddie @ 22 lbs, I very much doubt it. Have caught them to 5½ lbs and a young bloke I know has caught a few to 6 lbs as has been discussed in the past.

Still, a very interesting topic; redfin are considered a 'good' introduced fish but the crap are reviled by 99% of fishos in Australia.

The best contender for that would be the yellowbelly aka golden perch, as it grows to 45 lbs. and a worthy fish to tangle with.

Other perch type fish are: silver perch (bidyans) and macquarie perch (Macquaria australasica).

Barramundi aka giant palmer perch, simply could not be included due to the fact that its habitat is several thousand kilometres away from redfin habitat.

 

A bit of fanciful media hype, methinks. :D

Strange though isn't it? Holland is very close to us geographically and very similar in nature to parts of the UK (East Anglia especially). So why do some species grow so much bigger there?

 

Or was this a one-off freak? Are 6s and 7s caught too?

 

I've read somewhere (possible the Observers Book of Fishes) that they (old dutch Perchy) are more liberal when it comes to their diet and pastimes. In particular they are partial to the odd exotic tobacco experience which, alledgedley, can give you terrible munchies later on which results in extreme binge eating sessions. {The less said about the gudgeon the better}

 

The East Anglian Perch are, on the other hand, well known for their low-fat, high fibre diets and continued gym membership.
