Smoking ban

Your last sentence may have just topped the all time "Phoneism". I pride myself on being quite good.

Given that there was not one specific statement or contestable "fact" in your post prior to this line, I am clearly in the presence of a master bullshitter (Your claims about Thailand left me in awe!) and I suppose I should treat being called a phony as a complement...... :D:D:D:D

Edit, I should perhaps point out that I commute by bicycle across a major city so ash in the eyes isn't really surprising and Ive had worse, including being sprayed in the face by a car passenger with a supersoaker filled with what i hope was water. At least the ars3holes with cigarettes aren't malicious.

Government declares as illegal:

Heroin, Crack, Speed, Cocaine, Ectasy etc etc .....

All known to be detrimental to health.

Government doesn't ban Tobacco or Alcohol...both known to cause serious detrimental effects to health.

Why?

It is because the Chancellor enjoys vast taxation from them and through them many people are in employment.

Government up until the late 1960's never bothered with the fact that smoking kills because the tax revenue helped pay off our war debts.

Scientists knew Tobacco was dangerous in the 1930's.

Now banning smoking in Cars is too much. If there are Children in the car that's different in my view.

As each new generation arrives fewer people will smoke and so eventually the habit will die out.

They banned smoking in Pubs and killed off the licensed trade, a deliberate ploy to cripple the drinks industry if you ask me.

Now in your own personnal space Government seems to want to take over also.

Move over Democracy and welcome in Dictatorship.

Phone mate, we may not always have a concordance but you've gotta agree, that's (as you Americans put it) "Bullshine".

Why?
Because prohibition does not work. Prohibition just makes gangsters rich.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Ken, Cory,

Yepper.

"Law" is a negitive concept, the purpose of law is to prevent injustice. "Law" is there to prevent harm, not to encourage or mandate good.

Neither, I might add, is it a substitue for intelect and being informed. For the record smoking is stupid and no doubt, will contribute to your (my) demise.

Ken you highlighted my post and place the word bullshine underneath.

Are you saying my post is Bu**shi*??

Does not the chancellor take revenue from cigarette sales?

From the 1930's scientists knew tobacco killed.

After world war 2 taxes from tobacco helped pay off our war debts, unless you think the UK wasn't almost bankrupted.

Unless you think that the banning of smoking in pubs did not cripple the trade?

How many people in the UK employed because of the sale of Tobacco. Easy one to start is Customs & Excise.

Why can't government ban tobacco?

NHS gives free Nicotine Patches to people who wish to quit. Why don't they ban cigarettes and roll our a national Patch scheme?

If Government was serious about eliinating smoking in the UK cigarettes would be banned outright.

@ Phone---all businessmen are gangsters in their own right and all Politicians too. It is just a question of who gets the money first.

I will make one point however. Smoking doesn't kill everyone. I know an old woman of 93 smoking 60 a day.

She walks everyday and is seen regularly doing things beyond her years.

Now,

I believe Cory said that. As far as my personal opinion on the subject. We all have a little larceny in our genes.

Keep the faith. If the old woman "hangs on" long enough they'll get her. Maybe, like me, she offsets the effects of tobacco with yak pi$$. I have a bowl daily - - - - just in case.

Well, it costs the NHS £5 Billion a year to treat smoking related illnesses.

Then there's the £2 Billion a year cost to industry though smoking related absence.

Then of course, there's the cost of disability benefits (DLA and IB/ESA) for those with smoking related COPD, Heart Disease, Atherosclerosis, Oral and Lung Cancers and many other related conditions. Sadly I can't find a figure for that but suspect that it will be well into the billions. Not forgetting the cost of carers allowance for the relatives of those claiming the disability benefits.

Against £11.1 billion paid in tax by smokers.

Back on topic.

In the last 12 months, I have twice been temporarily blinded whilst cycling on busy roads because someone has flicked ash out of a car window in front of me. I would happily see smoking in cars banned tomorrow.

That's due to inconsiderate arseholes. I've been hit in the face by fag butts whilst riding my motorcycle. So? I've also been hit by sandwich packets whilst riding my motorcycle...what next, ban sandwiches? On top of that, riding an open vehicle without eye protection is just irresponsible...as long as you're prepared to accept that responsibility.

My car has an ashtray (two in fact) and a cigarette lighter installed as standard. Who's wrong here, the smoker or the manufacturer that realises that people across the world pay taxes to smoke a legal drug. Don't blame smokers, blame those that encourage it for financial reasons. Nicotine is a very addictive, legal drug....with no government disincentive (modern ****-speak?) to stop smokers.

You may never have even taken a single drag on a fag but, don't criticise or pass responsibility for your worst fears on those that do smoke. I f you have smoked in the past and given up then well done but, don't knock those that still smoke.

I was once complimented by my ex-wife as being a "considerate smoker" in that I didn't smoke when I thought it might upset others....shame it doesn't work the other way round!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Banning doesn't work, it just goes underground and breeds crime. Look at drugs in the UK today.

The Government has not suggested banning smoking in cars, it was raised by a few Drs in th BMA and never has been a serious suggestion so this whole thread is a fuss about nothing.

The smoking ban isn't responsible for the drop in pub useage. Look at prices compared to cheap booze from the supermarkets.

The reason I don't go into UK pubs is not because of the smoking ban it is because my family and I would have to run the gauntlet of the down and outs and tattooed f***wits blocking the doorway ;)

For the record I don't believe in banning anything (pretty much)

I would legalise currently banned drugs and tax them.

I would let licensed premises decide whether to be smoking or otherwise.

I would let people make an informed choice about how they want to kill themselves.

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.
