I find your replies to be hateful and rather personal, ie ''fantasist , locked in perpetual infancy, unable to break out of a stage of personal development '' to be totally unnecessary and odd to say the least.

Bitter very Bitter :)

You ask for what you get, you cannot adapt a pious 'holier than thau', 'I know it all, you know nowt' attitude like yours with inpunity'

Dont try to play the 'personal' card for you have a pop at anyone who chalenges you..

as for ther 'bitter, very bitter' bit, I image you shaking your head and acrually saying it, like some sort of television clique as part of a comedy act.

All,

Following this thread with as much interest as any since it is the only "fishing related" activity we seem to have right now. Not much to do with Tweed trout anylonger but interesting none the less.

You know you may be able to leave human arrogance out of the conversation all together. Could it be, as nature intended, Ruff have stickey little eggs that are transported by migrating birds?

Emma,

This is your legal choice but, in fairness, it IS unusual in the Uk.

Maybe it is in Eastbourne.

Several of us in the family fish, wider family and some friends think we are nuts whan we report how much time and effort we put into fishin' and yet well over 90% of what we catch is returned.

That is a possible explanation, but it doent answer why the ruffe population explosion is a recent phenomenon, why didnt the birds bring the eggs after the second ice age?

the place name 'Bassenethwaite' translates from the old Nordic as 'Place of Perch' they are ancient occupants, the ruffe are not.

Yes there is a sugestion that ruffe could have been transmitted in the bilge of larger boats, however one of the waters (Bassenthwaite)subject to the research I quoted doesnt have large boats upon it, it has a motor engine ban and the craft upon it are sailing dingies and relatively small, oar or electric powered vessels. So if the ruffe have been brought in from elswhere, rather than suddenly generating a population explosion, then the livebaiters bucket provides a much more plausable explanation.

I agree with you about the 'swipe' at livebaiting being influenced by fashion. We have been so negatively influenced by it, we are forbidden to use fresh water dead bait too. It has however made us think and be more adaptive in our lure fishing.

I think you dismiss easier than me all those little sailing dingies that launch and fill their keel with water, the same shallow water that ruffe spawn in.

TM, you have said to....

1. the lad who caught this fish in the first place

I am not surprised you have taken stick, and I think you must have posted this up because you might like a bit of stick

Personally I think it's a poor photograph and a poor reflection and what Angling is trying to promote in 2012.

I am not 'proud' of it as a fellow angler.

To Sportsman you said

... Tosh Sportsman

I don't really think you are grasping the argument

you are showing a lack of knowledge about angling,

it is difficult for you to keep in touch with the modern trends but feel free to ask, it is not a weakness you know.

you revert to name calling, and at the same lo and behold you become the mater of the art in the catching of Barbel.

It's no good back peddling now

To me you said...'taking the moral high ground as you do,

how patronising Emma

Stooping a bit low there Emma, however as I said I am in touch with current thinking

Barbel do not suffer re-capture

if anyone is blagging it is you

until you can show me that you actually have some personal knowledge

if ever there was a statement that was so naive and actually proves what I say is that you have no knowledge on the subject ,it is this.

as I have tried to with Sportsman, I will attempt with you also

As for the remaining rant, how odd that you accuse me '

After all that you 'whimper' about how bitter responses have been. Its called the 'social exchange theory' we expect to get back what we give out, occasionally, as with you some people feel that thay can 'give it' with impunity and they pout and whine when challenged', describing those who check them online as 'ranters' is a classic symptom. You have denied both science and other anglers, significantly those within the barbel angling world, one which you supposedly subscribe to, preferring to go on about how you know it all.

Perhaps, and I do see a few of these craft being brought in by trailer, however most sit on site year in year out never being launched on another water. We were presented with the state of play on the lake research in the bar of the sailing club. A whole range of questions were put to the research team, including the bilge theory. It would be possible that bilge from large vessels in the upstream Derwentwater could contain ruffe and they swam all the wat down the river into 'Bass' to infect it with their hordes, but to be honest I find the lifebait theory much easier to imagine.

This is my lifetime best Wild brown trout

all 7lb 5 oz of this beauty

she was 67 cm long with a 37 cm girth

She was caught on a spinner in the TWEED

Also she had 6 part digested trout inside her

a Real CANNIBAL

Congratulations, that's a cracking trout. The rest of this topic however, what a load of old rubbish  It's not unusual to take trout for the table; it's also not unusual to put them back. I hope that serves as a helpful summary :D Another topic spoilt by pointless arguing.

Dave, you said, "in the late 60's the medway at maidstone teemed with ruffe" ,no idea how many are left.

I have only ever caught Ruffe from the R Lea near Fishers Green, once, about 15 years ago. I was actually quite pleased to have got one :)

There could of course be hordes of them all over the place, but "One never hears any reports", so taking that as a starting point "One" could be justified in denying their existance at all :)

The fact that I rarely fished with a bait and hook small enough to catch them is totally irrelevant to the discussion or results deduced :)

Den

yes Den and strangely they were confined some how to downstream of the bridge  i never caught one even a hundred yards upstream (from the arch bishops palace) so i guess there was a particular thing about the river just there? and never any further upstream to the reeds (paper mills) and beyond their place was filled by tiny dabs?

i used to fish a few of the "victory" opens but it seemed the outsiders never got the prime spots :D

i just googled earth the bridge to get its name and boy has the place changed only the palace gave the clue as theres two bridges there now and the bridges car park where the "pools" were taken a fees paid to get miserably thrashed now some buildings

never caught them anywhere else though but the ones at Maidstone to me now looked different they were distinctly perch shaped but a reddish brown colour which seems odd on recollection so i can only presume they were dark coloured ruffe ? we (me) are thinking back nearly 50 years ago :D

they certainly had the spines and bony mouths hence the slowness of unhooking with the barbed hooks of the time

One good reason for practising catch and fillet....... :P

yum yum

Phone, they do have sticky eggs....at least on laying. Whether they retain their stickiness after time I do not know.

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!
