Will catch and release fishing be banned in the UK?

I was just reading back through the 'Hunting shooting and fishing' thread and saw sme references to catch and release fishing in the UK being banned at some point. Say in the next 50 years, do you think this will happen? It already has in Germany, do you think the public could go the way of fox hunting? And if it was made illegal would you still fish?

I can't see C&R being banned but if anglers annoy enough people with calls for culls and wish to ride ruff shod over all other wildlife and water way users then I would not be surprised if it came

Seeing as we've only recently had compulsory C+R forced on us I don't see it being rescinded any time soon...at least not as long as the Truss hold the best interests of the single species clubs at heart...

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

I think it is unlikely but possible, and if it did happen it would be the end of coarse fishing (given that catch and kill is already illegal). I would continue trout and sea fishing.

 

I think it could happen in two ways - either as the result of a test case brought by an animal rights group under badly drafted legislation which did not mean to have that effect, or through primary legislation as a quid pro quo with green MPs in a weak coalition.

I may be wrong but, I didn't think the Germans actually had a no C+R 'law', rather a general law that prevents cruelty to any animal. Different areas interpret that in different ways with undersize limits and keep-net bans for example.

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

A lot of pond/lake owners would be p!ssed off if their nice big carp were sytematically killed by anglers. I can't see it happening tbh.

I think it very unlikely that there will be a blanket ban any time soon.

As I see it the threat comes at a more local level if greens or antis manage to get themselves elected onto local or county councils.

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.
