Going back to the mindset of your first days?

I remember that first cast with a stringer of boilies on PVA string, now that was propa fishing and all. You don't see the art of threading some boilies on to a stringer needle much these days. Then the age of PVA bags before all that new fangled net in tube stuff came along.

 

This will make you laugh, I know it makes me sound old but back in the dark ages we used to crush boilies with our hands, no really its not a joke and if they where propa tuff like we used a scissors or pliers. Shocking stuff I know, those young wippa snappers now have korda crushers and boilis cutters.

 

Everything was better a long long time ago, we burned people for being witches, sent kids up chimneys, had a live expectancy of zero, had no Otters. Life was so good in the black and white days. Modern life is rubbish.

Boilies new-fangled? They're modern baits! They came in just about the same time as self-hooking rigs, one of the main reasons why carp fishing became so popular.

 

You young whippersnappers have probably never used potatoes like we had to in the 60s to avoid unwanted species. Mind you, for me they avoided carp as well!

 

P.S. At least whippersnappers like me didn't have to dry our lines in the days before nylon.

the interesting thing there is that a lot of the "old" baits would probably work superbly well on "boilie pelted" waters where the fish have become so used to scopex and tuttie fruitie!

I've made my mind up that I'm going to fish simple this year. One rod, one reel and mostly float tackle with simple baits like bread flake or feeder and swing tip.

 

1) I want to lower the amount of tackle we carry

 

2) I want to keep things simple and improve my watercraft.

Elton, I know you have spent a lot of money, time and effort on the upgrade. Any chance you can scrap it and we can go back to drawing on cave walls or in the dust. It will keep the old guys happy :-)

 

Maybe a blackboard and chalk would be a happy compromise or we could share information and ideas by pigeon?

I'm certainly not going back to walking miles carrying my gear, sitting on a cheap plastic seatbox all day, getting soaked cos all I could afford was a crap cheap argos brolly,all to fish either a london dock where you mainly caught bootlace eels or a council run park lake where I mainly caught gudgeon.

 

No thanks. In fact looking back I'm amazed I ever took up angling considering how crap the fishing was around the area I grew up!

What I liked the other day was being behind a 8 year old boy who bought bite alarms one of these young modern intelligent anglers. The assistant said...We have red and blue and White and yellow and orange so you can see what's what. OK mate I will take 4 blue one's please...

Have you got swingers sir? na mate i am not into all that stuff!...no as in bite indication Sir ? What like they got in those magazines that dangle off your line? well I will take all blue one's please? I see you have rods there sir......Yes I have these 4 all the same mate all at 4lb TC that's what it said on a forum mate by that 'Randy Plentyoffbrass!' you know the blue rods as I am fishing the canal this weekend for those lovely blue grayling. Yeah that’s it mate those 4 made up rigs you know those with a size two hook. 'I read about these rigs in 'sea angler magazine' Plastic maggot sir? I have green, blue, yellow, pink, stripes, lavender, raspberry, I will take all blue please mate

 

That's £3000 + VAT and an extra £200 for Blue mate in everything...

What about that SAS jacket over there..That’s £500 sir + AN OPTIONAL BOW TO HARPOON THE FISH.. I will take that.

 

How much for a rod licence... £27 sir for a whole year J...fekk that far to expensive mate what do you think i am made of money???

I dunno how they can justify that?

Fekk paying all that licence money!...My dad did what a mug he was !

Dave you must be unlucky in the anglers you run in to. Fishing attracts all sorts of people and it would seem that you run in to more of the worse kind then most. Like in all walks of life some anglers are nice and some are not so nice and a few are total idiots. I believe at one time every village had one. Just like in the past those idiots still exist today and will always exist. I think it is a bit strong to assume just because some one has certain gear it follows that they are complete noddies.

 

As I think I posted in another thread you are a man of contradictions :-) You are the same Dave H who posted about spod rods and modern hook lengths?

 

You rant about multi rod set ups, alarms, bite indicators like they are a badge of stigma to show just how untalented an anglers is. I know plenty of people who are very talented anglers and some of them even use plastic maggots. Surely you know some to, these sort of anglers far out weigh the few idiots I see.

 

We seem to have experienced the opposite things. I find as I get older in general I come across better anglers and you seem to experience the opposite. It might be just that as a kid I had to make do for fishing kit and venues and Woolworths was my tackle store and canals and ressies my waters. Maybe you shopped in Pall Mall for your gear and fished "crabtree" venues and so to me things seem much better. However, I do think you do young anglers a disservice. Many of the kids I see today are awesome little anglers, both technicaly and water craft. There are lots that are not but just do it for fun and there is nothing wrong with that either.

 

You seem to have a disdain for what you perceive as "modern angling" and we are all entitled to our own views on that. It's what I like about fishing we can with in reason and some rules fish in the way we like. So I can enjoy my multi rod set up fishing at the same time and place as you enjoy single rod and old skool tactics. As we fish the same water, we are likely to run in to each other in the coming weeks and as I sit behind my 4 rod set up with matching alarms (mine are purple and I did pay a premium for the colour) I can admire how you have the metal to stick to your convictions and fish properly with 1 rod using an acceptable method maybe strett pegging, swing tip, slider float?

Tomorrow I'll be fishing 2 rods on nice light modern bobbins and reliable alarms for perch. I suppose I could watch a float all day, and maybe in the eyes of some that would make each fish count double. Everyone has their own limits on what's acceptable, but I know I'd much rather fish in an enjoyable and effective way than put up with some of the tackle and techniques I used to have to use.

 

I do often fish in ways that people think of as traditional - quivertipping with a link leger, trotting with a pin, for example - but I do that because those are the most effective and enjoyable methods for those situations. I wouldn't spend all winter quivertipping bread if it was imposing a severe restriction on what I catch, I do it because it's the best method I've found!

 

Likewise, when tench time comes around, you'll probably find me fishing little bolt rigs and rubber maggots with multiple rods on alarms. But if someone else want to fish with a single rod and lift method in the edge, good on them, they must enjoy it more.

 

I know it's a cliche, but last time at the perch pond there was a guy fishing for the carp next to me. He had no interest in anything else, and even went as far as saying he actually hated perch, even though he'd caught them accidentally from the Thames up to 3lb 8oz! I told him why I like them, and that I had no interest in the carp. We both went away thinking the other one was mad.
