Not wishing to offend any Catholic readers(which Im not one)I have NEVER seen a man look as scared and overawd as the new Pope did when he stood on the balcony. WHY, OH WHY have elected another old duffer to lead the Church. Surely with all the problems the Catholic church has at the moment it needs someone a lot younger who will lead them for many years and reform and modernise it instead of living in the 18th Century which it surely is now.

Wow - age 76 - I've got to agree with you on the age issue. Seems crazy to me.

Short term popes don't carry baggage into the next decade. I suspect that they are hoping any insipiant scandals die with this one and the church can move on.

Interestingly, I've just had lunch wioth half a dozen Italians and their only response has been one of cynisism. Even the two self professed Catholics amongst them suggested that the new pope was just another figurehead for a bunch of paedophiles - and I thought the Irish were turning off religion...
