Although Norma and I have SEEN two cuckoos this year (one on Dunwich Heath in Suffolk last week, and one on Ashdown Forest this morning) We (or at least Norma who still has a hearing ability) have yet to HEAR one.

 

It seems to be received wisdom that cuckoos are scarce this year, which could be one reason for not hearing any, but why were the two seen not calling ? Too cold? In previous years they never seemed to stop calling.

 

Any sightings/hearings anybody ?

I've both seen and heard cuckoos at Wingham this year, but agree that there are fewer than usual. However there were also fewer last year.

 

On the other hand, nightingales have been very vocal the last couple of years.

Loads of cuckoos heard here in France, but yet to see one.

Thats not cuckoos ,thats frenchmen taking the **** out of the foreigner just out of eyesight

Easy to find just home in on 2 month old smell of Gauloises and theres your bird

I can post sources, published papers on cuckoo decline and breeding failure, but they all blame climatew change and that would just be pseudo-science to you Vagabond.

Heard plenty in the New Forest and seen a couple, first one arrived in this area on 4th April - I don't think I've been out in the forest without hearing at least one since my first two on 14th April.

 

The BTO has been tracking Cuckoos for the last couple of years:- Tracking Cuckoo migration

Looks like the canada geese have had breeding failure around here ,the pair at the pond abandoned their eggs and the 50 or so pairs that frequent moor park (a local estate) have had very few as i have only spotted a handful of chicks ,perhap there is a god?

The greylags with their incest (a male and two females most certainly related) have had 6 (one fell ill and was abandoned to its fate) and the other had 4 one of which probably met the same fate as the mallard chicks being scoffed by the resident heron as they were unusually small ,the coot has lost 3 chicks since yesterday the heron is looking very smug

 

Peaks and troughs if cuckoos fail the chicks and eggs they may have evicted may live
