British values?

I'm 64, lived here all my life, and I still can't figure out what these "British Values" are, that Cameron and co, advocate teaching in out schools. Are they the same ones that were taught to me 50 odd years ago, or have they changed over the years? I seem to have different values to many of the people I speak to, or read about in the media, so maybe I'm out of sync' with the rest of British society.

Any suggestions? (No rude ones please).

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

It's a weasel phrase, because they are afraid to say what they mean. Which is - in relation to the current scandal about schools in the Midlands - "not the values of conservative Islam".

British values are what your are told they are ,if you asked british people to determine what they want them to be there would be anarchy

Trouble is kids nowadays know nothing of the real past ,i was shocked to see a school photo of me in my year back in the days of yore compared to one from last years when unfortunately what was a minority then is the majority now ,like tinky winky the colour is arranged to benefit the minority incase they get upset but have no problem dismissing the majority because were all bigots

Melting pot is what springs to mind those nasty enemies we fought and died to keep our kids away from for a thousand plus years have crept in and are running the place it looks like

Parliament dont give a crap one vote is as good as another until it dawns on them race and religion of any type tend to get its foot in the door eventually and i have no doubt in not so many years a picture of the mp,s in parliament will resemble the last school photo from my old school!

I think today's British Values are indeed most of what's already been said, but also a tendency to exist in a permanent state of nostalgia permanently fuelled by the Daily Mail, Express etc,

We were responsible for the British Empire, subsequently the British Commonwealth and brought western culture and civilisation to the world.

We invented Football (soccer and rugby) Cricket, Golf, Baseball (rounders) Tennis (I think) Billiards, Snooker and introduced them to all of the countries included in the above.

We were at the cutting edge of the Industrial Revolution.

We had the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian eras that gave us all of these.

Since then, we've done nothing but apologise for most of the above and lost all of our national wealth fighting world wars that drained us of our youth and resources.

But we've come through all of that and still have the sense of value in our nationality that grew from an inherent ability to have a vision and to get things done.

God save the Queen!

It does worry me that "British values" may be some twisted idea about the middle class, tea with the vicar and bible study in school that most of our current crop of tory leaders grew up with - as if religion wasn't already the cause of enough problems.

Alternatively, it could end up as some sort of knit your own tofu "look at how all the strands of the empire pulled together in the war" nonsense.

Gozzer,

I think your last comment speaks volumes - "no rude ones please"

English nationalism is about a British as you can get.

“We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything.”
William Golding, Lord of the Flies

Never in any other society have people been willing to be critical of one another and picked up the sword so quickly when an outsider agrees.

I dont have a union flag and it annoys me half the population dont know which way up to present the damn thing ,not patriotic enough to find out ,as for the english flag it only comes out for football which is strange as half the players in english football appear to be foreign
