Did we bend over backwards when the Beth Din was formed ?

I don't remember doing that and in fact I would hazard a guess that most of the UK population (excluding Jews) don't even know these courts exist.

With regard to the news item, its only the Archbish of Canterbury spouting off and he doesn't make the laws of this land, so everyone can relax.......Muslim scare over.

This guy gets a seat in the House of Lords, just for being a big-wig in the church. Anyone up for separation of church and State, like in the US and in France?

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Think about it - choose your law!! If Sharia law gives the criminal an easier ride - he will insist on being tried under Sharia law and vice versa!!!!!!!

As I understand it the proposal isn't that Sharia law would be used in criminal cases. Instead it would be an option only in cases like divorce and business disputes.

I still have grave misgivings though and believe it would cause more division at a time when we need exactly the opposite.

Sounds like a dangerous & divisive toehold to me, societies are never stable until unified by a single & all encompassing rule of law. Allow people to be treat differently & our natural suspicion of different communities comes racing to the fore.

Our ruling classes seem to have lost all common sense

The Archbishop of Canterbury is an irrelevence. people are leaving the church in droves and in a desperate attempt to try and get some publicity he comes out with this clap trap. over the years he has tried to make overtures to the catholic church, methodists et al. whats the subject of his sermo ngong to be this sunday? "getting to know pagans" "devil worship, is it all bad?". The man is a sad joke

It sounds to me as if our loopy Archbishop has just appointed Max Clifford as his agent. It's just the sort of claptrap that he would suggest as a way of getting a few headlines.

English as tuppence, changing yet changeless as canal water, nestling in green nowhere, armoured and effete, bold flag-bearer, lotus-fed Miss Havishambling, opsimath and eremite, feudal, still reactionary, Rawlinson End.

"Not the Nine o' Clock News" has already been there in the early 80's, with a sketch entitled "The Devil - is he all bad?", starring Mel Smith as a trendy vicar.
