  1. Foil from cigarette packets is much harder to get these day.
  2. The blown maggots will soon bring up the Rudd. Then put a plastic red maggot on a small hook and chuck that out on a floating fly line (or use it to fish on the drop from a controller float). Concentrate on the edges of the boiling water. This is a brilliant technique at dawn/dusk. You will soon see what the largest fish in the shoal is like. If you want a sedentary snooze session this is not for you because the action is a bit frantic. The race is between the rudd grabbing the hook end and you straightening the line to get a chance of setting the hook. If the lake has been quiet that day then you will soon draw a crowd so the fly rod becomes a great visual aid, you might want to use the crowd to sell dodgy watches, time share etc
  3. Fences...damn right...but not good enough. What about the roof?...we need protection there as well.. Net the bugger in ...only another few thousand to put a cable between the pylons and then a decent mesh to keep cormorants and immigrants out. Put in a timer/movement sensor and electrify it. Get some serious measure in to stop the little Bs undermining the fence, ditches, submerged mesh. On the H&S front will need to ensure that this is seriously signed up and probably a clause on the day permit about no sudden moves etc to prevent accidents with any trigger happy bailiffs (sorry Chesters excluded there). We must expect robust counter measures from the enemy so a further phase of digging out shelters should be expected. I suspect that tests are already underway to see if pics of John Wilson will have some impact on deterring any of these threats. I even have a sneaky suspicion that there is a possibility of trip wires setting off a Johnno laugh alarm! 'Nuff said...
  4. Do you not think that it was invented by a female mind to make the male of the species pack in all those decorating, gardening and heavy manual tasks into one small period that is often termed Spring Clean? All that white spirit etc on your hands scares the fish off. When the start of season comes around I am ready to flop down on a river bank and relax.
  5. surely we should have an app somewhere for this
  6. That is a hell of a lot of urine, what had he/she been drinking?
  7. I couldnt stand the excitement of last year and I went down the post office. Sadly it turned up without a hitch..zzzzzzzzzzzzz
  8. Does choice of mug make a difference? Should we try to use a bone china mug?

    bait table

Either make your pockets bigger and deeper and just enjoy all the wriggling Or "borrow" the washing up bowl, drill a hole, bit of linen line, attach to a convenient button hole and there you are. Now What's wrong with that?
  10. There is also the difference between consciously detecting an aroma (old forgotten nappies come to mind here) and the less than conscious detecting of aroma.(it was only afterwards that you recognised the cheese in the pizza was mozzerella). It kind of goes in line with the mystery of why everyone else's bacon on a campsite smells better than yours.
  11. Get hold of a few old John Wilson videos where he is on a river.... he does describe the techniques of using the flow of the river to get your bait where you want it. Ignore the more modern funny baits, ex building site lakes and fancy foreign stuff (wall paper) This is a good example http://youtu.be/6bZ09bmY4UA
  12. When you look at the rest of the clobber on sale it does nt actually say that the rod nets match the unicycle....could be important...hmmmm! Musnt make assumptions!
  13. I think that I would also have called it a crucian, but it was great to get the extra info. However I expect that this will go out the window when I catch my next crucian, so keep it coming folks.
  14. Thanks for that. This is exactly what I want to find on the net.
  15. For me the whole point of river fishing is that it is a moving water, so dropping to the bottom does not appeal. If the water is moving it becomes a case of which float and which shotting pattern. I do use a 'tip when freelining or on using a drilled shot leger, but then again the bait is on the move. Personally I find myself using a quill float (porcupine if at all possible) but there again my lens prescription is getting meatier so maybe this advice only applies to those visually challenged.
  16. It does not actually give the weight of the worm does it?......hmmmm.
  17. Was there any sign that a spirit level was involved?
  18. Hang on....shouldnt the pallet be self levelling? On the topic of memory...it just isnt what it used to be.
  19. Are you allowed to use a gaff on one of them?
  20. Don't leave 'em on the bank! Chop them up and take out the tail. Throw back the rubbish (legs etc) as the attractor. Then use the tail section as the bait. I used to take off the scaley skin but it appears to make no difference if it is left on or taken off. Perch love it. If you leave the tail as a whole section the smaller perch struggle with it, but they still try! If you cut up the tail other species will also show an interest.
  21. Anyone else get a nice letter explaining that the EA had given your online details to A N Other? So is that why it took ages to get the licence? It just lowers the trust you have in their use of the technology. Perhaps they should stick to the phone. Hmmm.....next year online will not be on my list.

  23. Another positive for the closed season is just that...it adds a season. I actually have to leave the rivers and sreams and go fish a still water. Life already has too many pressures to conform to a single homogenous mass.
  24. Flow does not seem to be a problem from my experience but availability of silverfish is. Upland streams carry a lower weight of biomass and that relates to the number of predators that they can carry. hence alot of the upland fish rely on extra input to the system from flies etc.
  25. If we are boasting about the amount of tackle then I find that unpleasant. If we are boasting about our prowess with a rod catching fish then I am impressed. There is a dfference between catching fish and winching fish in. I used to accumulate floats, lines and gizmos. Now I leave 'em in the shed. There is more of a challenge reading the conditions and making very basic decisions about shotting and size of hook n line. It is def' more satisfying to catch fish on light line than on oversized tackle (but do not winch em in!). In the video there are many common sense points made, it is clearly stated about using no more bait than necessary. This is rarely observed and common sense is often seen flying with the pigs. Common sense would suggest that if you must persist in lugging drills and half a hardware shop to the swim please go where you are nowhere near anyone else (as in the video). Then while you are having fun you are not reducing it for others.
