Turkey and the EU

What do we think about this ?

Personally, I'm in the "No" camp.

Less than 5% of the country is actually in Europe.

Their human rights record sucks - especially in the East.

The EU would suddenly have land boarders with Syria, Iran and Iraq and the potential for sliding into a future large scale conflict is considerable.

surely isreal is in europe after all their in the european song contest :D

did you know the biggest buyer of mein kampf is turkey

i was wondering as we have now (i think) a euro wide criminal policy (i.e if a country that has something unlawfull in their law they can "procecute"anyone in another country for breaking that law even if not in the country in which its unlawfull) will germany be procecuting 500,000 turks for buying mein kampf as its illegal to do so in germany  if ofcourse turkey joins.

i wouldnt let them in they are an enemy of britain ,mind you so are most of the euro countries so an even better reason for not joinng completely ourselves.

Even if talks take place now there is no chance of Turkey entering the eu in the next 10 years and if accepted then probably 15 years plus and the majority of Turkish people don't want the eu.

They have all seen what the euro has done to economies and especially the tourist trade so Turkey stay where you are.

Hello all btw.

i think it could build bridges within the e.u understanding islam.turkey is fast becoming a investors dream and an awful lot of potential.yes its human rights are bad but this is where pressure from the e.u would rectify that.turkey could become the answer for all islamic countries where they took the political approach and reduced the power of religous extremism and are one of the few islamic nations that look like they actually exist in the 21st century.

Maybe last time you looked in 1918  but as far as I know Turkey has been a member of NATO for many a year.

And remember gentle English folk. St George came from Turkey so it must be alright. :P

Tsk, they'll have to get used to accepting predominantly muslim countries; how else are they going to absorb the entire former USSR? Can't put yourself up as the new second superpower if you don't at least have Siberia to send dissidents to, it's traditional.

The Turks with some help from Churchill managed to kill my wife's Grandfather in Gallipoli. Not that I bear a grudge, but my wife does! She blames Churchill.

She is right!
