So Ghadaffi dies

So Muammar al Gaddafi has finally been found and killed. I for one won't mourn him.

I spent 6 years working in Libya from 1980 to 1986. During that time I did feel on occasion that I was doing wrong in helping to support his regime but the lure of the petrodollar was too strong.

In a way it is a shame that he didn't stand trial in Libya although I think the outcome of that would be a foregone conclusion. It seems appropriate that he should have been publicly executed in Green Square in Tripoli as so many were under his regime.

One Friday in 1984 I was one of hundreds rounded up in central Tripoli and forced, at gunpoint, to witness the hanging of 5 young men. I never knew what their supposed crimes were but it served to put me off capital punishment for the rest of my life. For Gaddafi I would make an exception.

Ironic that for all of his brave talk he should be found cowering in a drain pipe.

I suppose Gaddafi didn't really kill 5 souls that day but killed one soul tens of thousands of times.

 

I can tell you post is chilling and very personal for you. The history of Gaddafi will be one of enduring horror and sorrow.

Everyone is missing a very important issue here.

 

Irrespective of who Gaddafi is or what he has done he was unarmed when killed.

 

A new regime supposedly better than the old behaves no differently than the regime they have ousted.

 

International Law, which every nation is crowing about, the reason for UN intervention, the violations of individual basic rights, states that a combatant who is captured must be afforded the Geneva Convention.

He was a combatant, as he was armed, he was found and either was disarmed or surrendered.

 

Gadaffi should have been taken prisoner and held for trial. As per International law dictate.

 

Clear violation of the Geneva Convention.

Clear violation of basic rights that the Insurgents went to war to fight for in the first place.

 

 

As to him hiding in a pipe. He was originally in an armed convoy was he not? His convoy was shot up was it not?

What would you do knowing that your enemy was closing in?
