Is it ok if I chuck in a few general skate questions chaps???

When did skate fishing take off in the area

What size have your skate been averaging over recent years

How long has the tagging programme been in place

How far from LA have you had one of your tagged fish reported

What is the lifespan of the big commons

What size is the current boat record - have you lost bigger ones

What is the longest fight one of your anglers has ever had from one etc etc

I am enjoying this thread enormously and love the input from everyone but would really appreciate a bit more craic about the actual fishing and the baits/techniques involved

Cheers everyone :rolleyes::rolleyes:

see davy

see davy

not sure about 227lb i think ???

ians biggest was caught by my mate kieth took him 1hour 50mins an she gave him a right pasting !got it on video too !! really funny to watch! never really got a true weight /chart size on it but ian has measured big girls to 219lb

best bait , i would reckon big coalie, second small coalie , third smaller coalie , 4th if you cant get a coalie , dont go!!!.. :clap2: naw john any bait from doggies to rainbow trout has a chance on the day , if they are difficult , sometimes a strange bait can make the difference !! even caught them on pike !!!!

Hiya,

Is it ok if I chuck in a few general skate questions chaps???

When did skate fishing take off in the area

It had been fished mainly from the shore with only a couple of fish caught from the boat when we started fishing it in Sep 1990.

What size have your skate been averaging over recent years

Roughly 140lb

How long has the tagging programme been in place

Started in 1974 by the then curator of Natural history as Glasgow Kelvingrove Museum, Dr Deitrich Burkel

What is the lifespan of the big commons

Upwards of 50 years

What size is the current boat record - have you lost bigger ones

227lb and yes, I've aslo landed 2 bigger ones.

What is the longest fight one of your anglers has ever had from one etc etc

Just on 2 hours (oops two and a quarter hours but that one didn't count as it was on the light gear :P ) Edited by Davy Holt

Have we lost bigger ones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hows about having to buoy the anchor. Get dragged around the Sound of Mull for 2 an` a quarter hours. Only for TWO hooks to get straightened!!! OR. Getting snapped off whilst using 55k braid!!! I suffered both those humiliations last Easter, so beware!!

The skate that towed Catchalot around, took 2 small slivvers of squid intended as doggie bait!!

Best to let your imagination run riot. `Cos believe me. Anything is possible.:crazy:

We don`t use J`s anymore!!
